So the story goes like this...My battery hold-down was broken, and we were mobbing down a bumpy road when...my 1989 3.0 tbi pathy started to act up and run rough and wouldn't idle. I limped back home and to my mechanic's shop when we found that indeed the battery had jumped up and shorted out. Once I got to the shop the pathy wouldn't fire. It knocked out my coil module? and I got a wrecking yard replacement. Now the pathy would start but it wouldn't idle. So my mechanic suggested we start with a timing belt and tune up, thinking that the short only knocked out my coil module?. After the timing belt and tune-up it still wouldn't idle.
Out of frustration I took it to another mechanic and he performed a smoke test and found that I had a leaky vacuum hose, he fixed it and it still wont idle.
What am I missing here besides a good mechanic. Did I mess up something else electronically? My mechanics don't seem to think so. I don't know if they pulled any codes and I don't know how to. What are your suggestions? I'm stuck, I think it has something to do with the short.

Will it rev? Is it still making reasonable power?

Not sure if that old a truck has an idle air control valve or not. There's also the throttle position sensor. Is the check engine light on?

Try pulling the codes yourself to give us more clues. Here is a link that may help. I found it in the How-To forum on this site.

Thanks for the link.

Yeah the pathy revs and runs fine. And the check engine light is NOT on. I just drove at highway and freeway speeds 45 miles to yet another shop. But when I let off the throttle, the pathy doesn't want to idle.

I wish I had found that link before I dropped the pathy off at the shop.

Oh well, I'll keep everyone posted.

Well the mechanic called and said my pathy was ready. Said he replaced the throttle body and now the truck idles great. Charged me $300.00. I don't know how to feel about it. I'm picking it up tomorrow and will see how well it runs, I want to keep my old throttle body for spare parts.
Do you think the short at the battery knocked out a sensor on my throttle body or are these two unrelated events? The check engine light never did come on...

Un related events. On the throttle body truck idle is regulated by a vacuum type system. Basically there's vacuum lines coming off your coolant lines to the throddle body. As the pressure heats up it idles down the truck. On most VG30I engines they don't idle right any more. They will idle around 1300rpms and never idle back down when warm.

It's been 3 years since I sold my 2dr pathy with the vg30I. I researched why it idled high but don't quite remember everything about the system.

The problem wasn't with a high idle, rather it was a low idle problem. The motor wouldn't stay running if I let my foot off the accelerator. The pathy is still in the shop, payday is this Thursday so I'll hope to get it this weekend.

If he actually did all that(injectors alone) then you got a steal on parts and Labor. Their's always gonna be dishonest *professionals* and I've had Mechanics Lie, cheat & steal(especially with parts like Injectors that you can't verify easily) but I always try to give everyone the Benifit of the doubt and find somone I get a good vibe off of.

Peace
