What do you want to achieve? (Don't say "more power")
K&N filters are available and are good if you drive in dusty conditions often because they are cleanable. No performance gain, though.
A snorkel is a good mod.

I took out the whole filter box, and replaced it with a K&N cone filter. It is easy to fab an adapter. A friend made me one for $10. It sounds much better, small powergains, and better gas milliage.

The vg30i has the air filter sitting on top of the engine...There's not much you can do to modify the air filter system.

On vg30e the air filter box is positioned close to the driver’s fender and headlight. Wit this set-up you can remove the box and throw in a cone filter.

For keeping debris out your engine the best set-up is the stock filter box and a good paper filter. The stock box does a good job of keeping sand, dirt and water away from the filter.

Take some advice from someone who replaced an engine because I wanted some performance gain. DONT do the cone filter. I had to replace my motor cause I hydrolocked the damn thing...driving around in rain.

Is the snorkel the way to go for better gains? How about driving in heavy rain with a snorkle?

Wont affect you. The inlet on the snorkel is angled down to avoid such a scenario.

Me too!
what would removing EGR and getting an external PCV filter do for me?
also can a vg30 tbi take in too much air? I want to put another inlet in my airbox (engine top mounted) so it draws air from both sides, a co-worker said it will make me burn to lean. what do you all think?

Removing the EGR will not effect performance noticeably. If it is working, leave it alone.

Add as many inlets as you want. The ECU controls the fuel mixture. If you take the cover off the air cleaner and run the engine it runs just fine, doesn't it? That is proof that you cannot give it "too much air". Wink

Yes it does appear to run fine, I don't know how much old 89 ECU's can do on a TBI engine.
And How about External PCV filter? they are like 10 bucks but does PCV really do anyting to your engine?

positive crankcase ventilation valve. Basically it vents the crankcase from gases escaping from the combustion chamber.

Most common problem of a in op PVC valve are blown valve cover gaskets. The PVC valve has nothing to do with power/performance.

with a TBI set-up there's no much you can do to help/make it breath better. The best thing you can do is keep clean paper filters installed. If you run though a lot of mud/water a air hog/K&N oiled filter will be best.
