recently i have been off roading like every day with my 1995 pathfinder and i HAVE NOT USED the 4x4 all but once than iput it back into 2 wheele drive. i went to use the 4x4 the other day and the driver side front tire was making a realy bad grinding noise. did i strip the gears or what?

Doesn't sound good- sounds like the hubs need maintenance/rebuild.
You have the auto hubs? or manual? i think w/ auto hubs- you have to backup a few feet , once you disengage 4wd - that( supposed to) will unlock them. Or is it thta backing up fully disengages the transfer case. I fergit. i would wait for a real 4wheeler to chime in as I'm just regurgitating what I've read in the past on the subject. got your owner's manual handy? .....................
