shocks are an easy DIY job. If you are in new york, it'll be best if you have a garage you can do it in. The rear shocks use a 17mm wrench to get the retainer nuts off top and bottom. It shouldnt take more than an hour or so, even if you've never done rear shocks before. ------------------------------------------------------------ <--Click Me! You can put a carrier on with little to no effort minus one part. Go to the salvage and get the carrier and brackets inside the body panel. So far I have not found a way to get the lower piece out of a truck. It is $25-30 from Nissan I think and a pain in the ass to get in there.
The two pieces that the latch and guide bolt into are already inside the body panel (below the lift gate) so you just drill a pilot hole and then enlarge to whatever size the bolt is. They are marked with dimples in the sheet metal.

Check the sheetmetal below the rear door. I dont think the holes for the hinges will be marked, so you'd be on your own for those. ------------------------------------------------------------ <--Click Me! The dimples are for the two brackets that go with the tire carrier. One is the latch and the other is a guide to line the carrier up with the latch.
As for the brackets that hold the carrier to the truck, there are no dimples or indicators of any kind. Mount the bottom two brackets first then set the carrier up against the truck and mark your holes. Make sure the carrier is about level when marking them.
