I have a very well used 89 Pathy with a 5-speed & V-6. I've always had a few seconds of valve tap at start-up, but in the past few days it's become considerably worse. Has anyone had this problem before and what steps did you take to correct it? Thanks for all the help this site has provided.

I live in eastern PA and it's been in the upper 30's and lower 40's when starting in the morning (also does it after work when it's in the mid 50's)

Are you using a cheap oil filter? If so, spend a little more for a quailty filter that has an anti-drainback valve. The hydraulic lifters tap at startup if they arent getting oil. Also use a lighter weight, multi-viscosity oil since its getting cold (REALLY cold by my California standards).

Thanks Scott, last oil change was a couple of weeks ago @ Jiffy Lube, I know...not the greatest. I had them put in 10W-30 oil, but I can't imagine they are using a Fram filter (or even a close equivalent) I'll give a different filter a try and see if it makes a difference.

Heavier oil might make the lifer tap go away. If it's cold you should not go any higher than 10-40.
Farm filters are good. If you are having problems try a Nissan filter. Some people notice a difference. change the oil and install a good filter. Report your results. It's cheaper to do the oil yourself. Especially when trouble shooting a issue. 1995 KC XE-V6 4x4. |

Jiffy lube and the like use the CHEAPEST filters you could possibly put on a car. I worked at a Valvoline for a summer and their filters cost them next to nothing.. Try putting a good oil filter on the truck (one with a good anti-drainback valve like a K&N, WIX, or other decent brand) and see if that helps.

No, Fram filters are like the worst filter you can use. Try a good one like Bosch or try to find a Motorcraft (ford) filter that has the same thread and diameter thats required for the VG30...or get a Nissan OEM filter and end headaches instantly.

 Oh god.Dad went there- they drained the lube fromthe trans( only 70 miles new) and overfilled the crankcase. There was a time long ago that I would have agreed with you. I believe it is probably the same price, DIY versus Jiffy Lube. Oil is getting more expensive. Factor in your time (opportunity cost) and getting dirty and sometimes its cheaper/easier just to take it to someone--if you can use a coupon. That said, I still think its better to DIY. I will always pay more and use quality stuff and have the feeling of doing it right, rather than saving some time and money by getting it done by someone else. I aloso get an occasonal tap, usually when its cold or not ben run for a few days, sometimes it lasts up to 40 sec but usually its not more than 10 sec. I've always used a fram toughguard filter however in the past year I have also been using "Lucas Engine Oil Stablizer" and that has seemed to make it less frequent as well. Hope this helps.

Hey ya'll,
All I run is Dual Bosch Premium's(the black ones) with Mobil 1 5W/30. I've never had any problems with Noisy Lifters or Valves but let's be honest, EVERYTHING on our bloody SOHC VG engines can be noisy. It's hardly a quit engine by any Standards. When I was running none OEM Nissan Drive Belts.......my god! Talk about a Terrible Symphony of f'in belt Noise. The BG Company Makes an Awesome Oil Additive(everything they make is awesome IME but don't use it with a High Detergerncy Oil Like Mobil 1). Good Ole Marvel Mystery Oil is fantastic for the Fuel System and Oil! Peace |

Good quality filter and lower viscosity oil may help. If it taps a lot, you may be looking at some work. but the work isn't hard.
If you pull the valve covers off and remove the lifters you can clean them (often refered to as rebuilding them) and get great results. I've done 3 sets of VG30 lifters in the last few months and each of them is quiet as can be now. Someone did a writeup on it but I am unable to find it now. Basically just disassemble them, clean, reassemble. |
