Do some reading/searching, this place has more feedback on 'em than anywhere else.

I don't have them, but I can tell you if you wheel then they are definately worth it!! And from what I've read, they're not too hard to install, either

If you rock crawl or do high altitude wheeling, they're awesome. If you're a mud bogger, don't bother.

I think that a rear locker would be a better mod if you have an auto tranny...if your rig is manual and you're primarily wheeling in rocks, go for the crawler gears.

well i just have a bundle of money that im going to dump into my truck, im in the process of doing a sas/frame swap and repair, vg33 swap and long arm, and i have 10g to do it with, so lockers are already on there way and i have about 2g left out of the 10g, so its either i get the gears or use the 2g to bring my debt down to about 8 and save for the gears

oh and it is an auto

Hey Jim, the tcase gears arnt really req'd for around Alta/BC, there is too much mud dirt to need the low crawl ratio, you need the tire spin more then the grunt of torque, no one in our local club has the gears we just gear the diffs properly and hit the trals. If you are planning on heading to Moab lots, then yes the gears are worth it. I would save the money for now, as there are ALWAYS costs that you didnt plan for and its nice to have a bit of cash to finish up the project the right way. Did you start your cutting yet? Sorry Im not around to help.
Oh hows it going up in the big cold, Belize is wonderfull this time of year, haha, ha! Sorry.

I was planning on doing a half rollbar just behind the front seats and create a little safety cage for the occupants. Just incase the worst happens.

i would have it started to be cut up right now but my uncle and mom talked me out of doing it in the cold, and yeah i guess i can wait on the gears that way it can give me the insurance that it WILL get done the right way, im going to definatly take it to moab atleast once, haha because i dont know if ill have enough money to go down there a lot, i got another vehicle already so i have sometihng to get to work and back in while its being cut up, so for gears im either giong to run a 35-37" tire so 5.13 and 5.14 gears should work, yeah to bad your not around to help, but you never know i could still be working on it when/if you come back, roll bar eh? when you do that give me a call and ill help and make one for my rig aswell, unless calmini comes out with theres before weather is not to bad its been sitting at about -7 clear and sunny, calgary got hit with a big snow storm after christmas,

Yah, its not a good idea to do it in the cold, for one your welds would be worse, plus your balls wouldnt thaw till may.
Somone eles already mentioned it, but with the auto its not as bad rock crawling as the 5spd is, your torque converter acts as a buffer from stalling out. But if you are planning 35's or bigger on the auto I would go lower than the 5.13's, you want the final ratio to be lower then stock not higher. 5.13 with 35's would be stock ratio and you would have problems turning anything bigger, especialy when they get buried in mud. Thats where my 5spd is handy, 5.13 would be very low.

you have a good point there....but i think i remember reading somewhere that the gearsets after 5.13 get weaker because of the size, or is that just because people rat bag on there trucks and like to break stuff, you wouldnt happen to know what gears the guys have in your club do you?

What diffs are you using Jim?

Some are using 5.13's and some are using 5.38's.I belive John has 4.63's.

I beleive the pinion gets weaker due to its size, although I can't really see that being a problem unless you drive like an ass like John.(hehe sorry beach boy)

He said "Ass" Razz
Kevin with the 35's and auto 5.38
Chris with 35's and stick 5.13
Chris is still running the nissan rear and kevin d44 rear. I dont know if you can find lower gears for nissan then the 5.13. And as Don said its only if you are bagging on it, but the H233b can only handle so much bagging with 35-37's anyway so you would start breaking stuff reguardless. Thats why I like my 33's, I can use lots of skinny peddle and not worry about breaking anything, almost.
