I have been spending some time with the CJ-5 and I love the way it wheels, It only have one major draw back and thats how small it is. Most of the time I do not have a passenger but there have been certain week-ends that I would kill to have a back seat. So a friend of mine sold me this

It came with an HP44, 9", 4.0 with very low miles, AX15 and a 231. The stock axles on it were sold already. I have no use for the axles or d-train so me and 2 friends split it up 3 ways, one got the motor, tranny t-case and the other gets all the ford axles and suspension.

The plan is to keep most of all the CJ-5 suspension the same, just swapped over to this frame. I also plan to put the CJ d-train in there. The only upgrades I really plan on is mabye a v-8 and rear steer.

Started with this in the morning.

Got to this just after lunch

Pulled the CJ up to measure everything and compare everything.

You can see how much more room is in the YJ

One last pic

After I measured everything I have my plan, it appears that the bombproop MORE mounts in the CJ will work in the YJ, the plane is to mount the motor as far back as I can, so the trannsmission would be in the same posistion as it would be if I had the V8 in there. That will provide some big advantages, I can run a mechanical fan again for better cooling, it will have better weight distribution, and most importandly I will be able to get a lower ride height on the front suspension.

The front suspension will be all the same from the CJ, I will even try to re-use the shock towers. I will have to figure out to to tie the shock towers into the frame to prevent another bent frame.

The rear suspension may have to change some, I am not sure exactly what will happen yet until I see how everything falls in. I dont want any more wheel base but I dont want to give up my 90* departure either, so the axle will be pushed back just until the 90 and left there. I plan to cut off the rear frame and rebuild it higher to allow for more compression.

For the cage I am still undecided on wether to build off the stock or not, I would like something completely new but thats a fair bit more work and more tube.

you would probly find the titan stripped of anything of value and jeep tracks all over the top of it Smokin

Most of it will remain the same, except for a hopefully lower ride height and rear steer sometime in the future.

Got another day cranked out on it, I got a late start but I think I got a good bit done. I got the CJ-5 motor completely ready to go. The YJ should be ready to accept the motor and with any luck it will be mounted by the end of Sunday. I think todays work is about the worst part of any build, luckily I got all the brackets on the front end removed. Also went ahead and removed all the fuel lines and such.

I had noticed something that sounded like a pulley bearing going bad and found the source, 1 bolt was missing and the other completely backed out to the point shown and was causing the noise. I must have forgot to torque those down over the summer. Does anyone know how to remove that pulley to get better access to these?

I used the plasma and chisel method to remove all the old backets and it was a pain in the ass as always, but it didnt really take that long.

Last of the welds ground down and the engine harness removed, Ready for the engine.

I am assuming that is the power steering pump and you need a power steering pump pulley puller. Autozone has them. Has a piece that goes in the hole and clamps around the edge on the pulley to pull it off.

Just out of dumb curiosity, what's the chisel used for in the "plasma and chisel method"???? Just curious. Later... Chug

You run the plasma on its side to cut most of the weld off, and then you use a cold chisel to put the part off it self. Otherwise its pretty tough to not cut the frame. It only takes a few seconds to grind whats left down.

I got some more cranked out on it today, but first here are the pics of the motor mounts.

This shows the oil pan below the frame, I will trim that plate off later.

Start of the skid/tranny x-member.

Today I couldnt just get into the building groove and spent all day on the front 4-link. Fairly unproductive, The Jeep is sitting on its own weight in the front now. Just gotta finish weld the brackets and do the coil-over towers and the front will be done.

CJ-5 looking pretty unhappy

Well, I have been thinking about renting it or Morris Mountain for my b-day in May. It would be on Mothersday week-end, do you think anyone would have a problem coming out on that week-end?
