I'm going to try to build one of these...

Errr.. rather, a very close replica of one of those.. Basically a street legal supercar "go-kart" with absolutely insane performance characteristics.

It can be built with basic box steel tube chassis:
http://www.corvidcreations.com/votus/index4.html

Cad drawings and a complete set of instructions are here:
http://www.mcsorley.net/locost/

Have already found a couple possible vehicles to use as drivetrain donors for less than $800 for a complete car. The entire car can be built for under $3000, I'm estimating.

With a curb weight of around 1100lb, coupled with a 150hp powerplant, 0-60 times would be somewhere around 4.5 seconds. Up it to 200hp, and you'd be talkin ~3.6s 0-60 times. Sounds fun, huh?

The entire chassis is built using 10-15 10' sticks of 1"x1"x.090" box steel.

May go pick up some steel to play with tonight when I go visit the steel shop.

I know. Smile

I just want to weld on stuff. This would be new, kinda fun, and different. ...And small enough to stick in the corner of the garage whenever I feel like doing something else.

The pathfinder is as done as it needs to be at this point, and aside from minor adjustments here and there, theres not much else I need to do to it (other than wheel it!)

Think of it like.. a roof rack with wheels and a motor. Smile

haha, true. I am lacking in the stuff-on-blocks-in-the-frontyard department.

Funny you would go this way as soon as I leave. Guess what project Mike (my friend/boss in hawaii) and myself have started collecting parts for? rather similar, although a little more on the overkill side. Will look more like a shrunk supermod oval car, 351C, 4spd, enough running gear to make it drive, and a seat. Going to call it the autoX car, but really, its the same thing you're looking at, just with a lot more motor for no good reason.

Called on a few parts donor vehicles. Have found a few options in the $500 range that would give me a 4 cyl 150-200hp powerplant, 5 speed, and 12" disc brakes all around. Smile

Jove, go download the cad drawings for this chassis. It would work very well for what you want to do as well and would take out a lot of the guess work as far as the suspension goes.
