That's not quite an accurate statement. Technically any of the engine swaps we've done in our 510's are illegal when it comes to emmissions. If you were to do it legal you would have to get your car inspected after you did the engine swap. The car would then have to meet the emissions requirements from the car that the engine was pulled from.

Luckily they don't do underhood inspections on older cars here in AZ so it's not too likely you'd ever get hit for it.

That may be true.. But... My 510 doesnt have a hood right now and I've taken it in to emissions test it like that for the last 4 years. They see that it is a modern V6 and sometimes ask what the engine came out of, but they still only test it for 1972 standards. They set the computer to test it for 1972 6 cylinder standards. The emissions tester people have never said anything to me about it being an illegal swap though.. it runs much much cleaner (blows all zeros!) on the 1972 test, so they are happy.

True, the people working at the testing center don't care. That's why you get away with it. They also can't fail you for a visual inspection because there isn't one. They can look under your hood all they want, but can't fail you for it.

They make everyone pop their hoods now. I argued with them when I took my K5 in but they said it's a new rule. Everyone has to pop their hoods for safety reasons. No inspection though.

Tonight, I started on the independent rear suspension bracketry. Got the lower bracket tack welded in and have the upper bracket ready to go in as well. started getting late so I decided I better not annoy the neighbors too much.

I measured it out and it looks like with the A arms I'll be using, WMS to WMS will be about 59" in the rear, which is about 5" wider than normal sized 7s. Wink Body width is exactly 46" as pictured on the first page.

Rear suspension geometry is adapted from the Tiger Avon, which is another Lotus Sevenish/Caterham-like car, but has an engineered rear suspension which seems to be pretty decent.

Also came across this monster.. another one of Tiger's creations.. available turn-key from them.

The Tiger Z100, factory equipped with twin GSXR 1000cc engines.

0-60 in 3.11 sec.. the awd version has a 0-60 of 2.8 sec.. Eek Eek Eek pretty quick would be an understatement!

Yep, if you can swing it, AWD is the only way to get all that power to the street, otherwise, don't waste the money on a lot of horsepower.

AWD is heavy though.. and would be terribly complicated for a car with a hood height of less than 26" or so and very little room for anything other than the rwd drivetrain. AWD IS nice, but would be a nightmare to implement. I dont really want to go there for my first car.

Lots of horsepower is fine if the suspension design is sound. The caterhams and Westfields put 300+ hp to the ground in their upper end rwd cars with almost the exact same chassis.. Good enough to get sub 4 sec 0-60 times.

Welp, I just got a free rolled Suzuki Samurai, complete and running.. The drivetrain in it is in great shape. I may just drop its engine and tranny in the Seven for now and use whatever misc parts (steering column, radiator, pedals, hydraulics, etc) I can scavenge off it for the rest of the car. I'll still need a 240sx or something of the sort to grab suspension parts and brakes, but at least I can start some real fabricating.

Anyone need any Samurai axles or T-case?

Actually Datz, I have someone who I'm pretty sure will take those axles. Are they just stock?

Yep, bone stock. Axles, transfer case, steering box, steering parts (other than the wheel and column stuff), fuel tank, etc.. all will be up for grabs. For now, its gotta roll so I can strip out the heavy stuff. But after that, I can put it up on blocks in the backyard and pull axles, etc.

Since I'd have to pull the parts out, I'll be selling them, but they will be cheap. What are these parts worth to the zuki guys?

Yeah, I looked up the hp rating and its only 64. We'll see. At least I'll have a radiator and other parts I can use. Something with a little more power would be preferrable, since this chassis is a little oversized to fit a larger engine.

Right now, everything is just tack welded on the chassis. Still moving parts around here and there. If you want some general weld photos, look up my SAS topics in the Skidplate alley. Hundreds of photos in there of when I did the pathy axle swap.

thanks John. i think i just need to slow it down. Now i'm wondering why the hell i get these friggin stalagtite-ish projections. like i lay a alright bead, just function, no form, and as it's cooling it'll pop out a little pimpley bubble. if i move quicker it wont do it.

What about a Honda motor for it, or hell nissan for that matter, But use a front wheel drive motor and tranny rotated 90 degree's lengthwise, get a spool or just weld up the diff and go for the awd.
a S2000 motor for rwd or a SR20det would be the chit but not too cost effective.
