I was a mile from home in '86 when I crashed my '84GPz750 Kawi. Went to get groceries for a BBq.

-Dressed in shorts, t-short, tennis shoes. No helmet or gloves.

Some ass got behind me- tailgaiting- I wicked it up a little, looked down at the speedo- 85mph- looked up and there was a big rock in the road. Maybe 6" around. It was so fast, I couldn't react/ didn't even try/ left 260' of bike debris and my hide along the road.

I remember looking into the headlight as I was going over the handlebars..

Bike and I stoppped sliding( we were separated thankfully- not tumbling around/on each other). The tailgater sped around me and kept going.

The next car- I heard slam on it's brakes-seemed to be coming right for me. I looked back and it was , so I rolled to my left and it stopped where I had been laying in the road.

I was fully conscious( no helmet). WHy I didn't whack my brain bucket is anyone's guess, but I had another "knee" in the middle of my left thigh, and roadrash on my arms, legs, butt.

I asked the driver of the car that had stopped to pull on my leg. I was insistent- they did- and the pain eased greatly. I broke it in 5 spots, but it was not a compound fracture.

Why I lived Confused still haunts me on occasion.

Lessons learned:
-don't overdrive your headlights( night accident)

-ATGATT mentioned above

-There is a higher power

One day ,a week after ,while I was at BAlboa Navy Hospital ( in the Marines at the time), I was reflecting on the accident ,and why the hell I didn't die. I guess I was having some sort of higher power epiphany as a group of navy doctors were making rounds.

There I am in the rack w/ a 2 week beard all joyous to be alive when I saw them approaching
( Quite a few "brass" w/ interns in tow). I blurt out, "Hi guys!".

The response was quite stern from one of the Captains ," WE ARE NOT GUYS"...

"Yes sir, sorry sir"

I still laugh about that .

GAve up bikes after that.

Now that I've proven that my first build works great, Im on to bigger and better things...

Today's $200 Craigslist score. This is a 1996 Gary Fisher Aquila MTB. This will be the bike that I'll be installing a jackshaft drive kit on. It is a 27 speed from the start, so this thing is going to have just a wicked range of gearing available. It'll be running a 48cc boygofast slanthead engine, which will be painted flat black with some orange tribal flames to match the rest of the bike.

Here are the pics:

Overview of the stance of the bike:

Kenda Kinetic Kevlar tires (Had to ditch one due to sidewall damage, but wil be looking for a replacement kevlar armored equivalent):

Iron cross pedals.. pretty pimp:

The headset lock says it all:

This sticker will totally fit the bike once the engine is installed:

Deore LX derailleurs:

Count them.. NINE gears out back.. yeah baby!

Mavic wheels.. These run nice and true. These DID have presta valves/tubes in them but I decided "screw that" and drilled the wheels out to fit standard schrader valves:

linear pull brakes front and rear. Stop this puppy on a dime!

And here is the drive kit that will be going on this particular bike:

It may take some slight frame modification to make it work, but it will be well worth it to have gearing from rock crawler slow up through street scorcher fast at my fingertips...

11doh Whew, I thought I killed another thread w/ my last post.

The last pic looks configured such that the rider will be "pedaling"- crankset won't freewheel?

You're aware that chain life goes away quick if you're really "crossed-up"( innermost gears in back/outermost chainring in front,& vice versa)?

This kit comes witha freewheeling front chain ring setup, so you only pedal when you want to, otherwise the chains are spinning all the time.

You can easily build your own, man... they are really easy to put together. If you can do simple auto maintenance, these things are a peice of cake to work on. These things are used in a lot of 3rd world countries, so they make them simple to maintain.

read up on everythng you need to know at this forum:

Yep, I've been following his plight for some time now & have donated a good amount of $$ to his cause.

Basically if the government cant tax it, limit it, control it, or police it, they start pulling stunts like Torques is in the middle of. Scottsdale is the Utopian vision of group of Socialist cheese and whine california asshat transplants (no offense bille, we know you arent one of them). They cant handle someone thinking outside of the Neimann Marcus box.

So far, the Mesa PD have been really good to me. My philosophy is that if I'm minding my own business, riding safely and not being a hazard to myself or others, the PD should leave me alone. SO far, that has worked well. I generally cruise between 23-25mph and all is well so far.

There technically is no speed limit either. The ARS code mentions a manufacturers design speed of 20mph, but says nothing about a legal speed limit. All these kits are shipped with sprockets that limit the top speed to around 20mph... but with a little ingenuity, you can go much much faster.

Hey John,

Have you looked at these guys: http://www.bikeengines.com/index.htm

The belt driven systems with the motor over the rear wheel seems interesting. I kind of like the idea of the Suburu 4 stroke engine - mostly no need for mixing fuel and less engine noise.

Do you wear ear protection when driving your bike?

Where do you get that kit to add the freewheel for the crank assembly? These kits have been a huge turn off to me unless I could power the rear wheels through the gears.
