over on www.motoredbikes.com there is a guy that goes by Ghost0. He and another member have developed a kit for doing just that. Freewheel cranks used to come on quite a few bikes back in the mid 80s. THey have found a company that is producing them and are including these cranks in their kits.

Read this thread for some mroe info:

Do you wear ear protection when driving your bike?

Yep, that'd be the GEBE kit. Those have their pluses and minuses. First off, the Subaru engine is probably the most reliable bike engine you'll find. They'll last 10,000 miles or more. Also, the belt drives are really nice in that they are very quiet and you dont get the chain shock that you do in a chain drive setup when accelerating/slowing down. These rear rack mount systems are also very quiet and have almost zero vibration compared to the 2 cycle frame mounts, which can buzz your hands off.

The downsides: The belt drive is a toothed belt. These are known for skipping teeth while riding, and eventually can shear the teeth off the belt. Most GEBE riders carry a spare belt just in case. Also another thing is that having the engine that high puts the bike's COG way up high. Doesn't seem like that big of a deal, but these engines weigh more than the bikes they are on, typically. Riding one of these above wheel units vs a frame mount unit, the higher COG is noticeable, but not too bad. Also, there is the very real possibility of the bike falling off the kickstand and cracking the engine housing (has happened to numerous ppl over on the motoredbikes site.

The GEBE engines are considered one of the Cadillac's of the bike engine world along with the STATON chain drives ( http://www.staton-inc.com/ ) that use the same subaru engne.

No, there's really no need for ear protection while riding my bike. The muffler actually does a very good job. The engine sound is more of a low pitched buzz. Its quiet enough that you can barely hear it coming up the road.

Well it is official. My wife has agreed to donate her TREK 850 for my project. However, now I'll have to use the bike for nearly every milk run or overdue library and video runs around town since I'll have the most fuel efficient mod of transport. Even better than her 47mpg diesel golf. I think since I got a solid bike for free I'm going to go with the Subaru engine. The GEBE site has a several week delay for shipment. The Station set sounds interesting as well.

You'll really like that subaru engine. they are dead reliable and very very quiet engines. The owner of Staton has said that hes seen upwards of 20-30,000 miles put on them before rebuild/replacement in a bicycle application. Be aware that with the Staton setup, you will need to have a new rear wheel built for the bike with Staton' special drive hub. More information should be available over on www.motoredbikes.com
and on staton's site: http://www.staton-inc.com/

The other advantage to the 4 stroke setup is that you will very likely get MUCH better mileage than I am. If you keep the friction and speed down, you could see as high as 250mpg.

I am currently getting a measured 140mpg with mine.

Another thing.. get a GOOD kickstand, something like that double stand that I put on mine bcause with the engine up high you need the stability to prevent the bike from falling over when parked.

I think I found the saddle that Id ultimately like to get for my new bike to really give it the most comfortable ride on the road:

A Brooks England Classic City transport.. been in production sicne 1927 and supposed to be one of the most loved seats they make:

JOhn , That's a great saddle, but there are others not quite so expensive( 4 of these for the price of 1 Brooks), w/ spring suspension, gel padding, and "anatomical relief" in the center

The Bike BArn( phoenix) has some variations on these sprung ,gel saddles

The cool thing about these engines is that if I accidentally ruin it while trying something new, I can rebuild the whole top end for about $40. Big Grin

I think the only reasonable thing is port matching the intake and exhaust, and matching the ports in the sleeve to the castings in the cylinder. Does it have a reed valve?

And then there's decking the head and adding a "squish" area....

I just saw a seat similar to the one in Bille's post that did not have the horn part in the front. All it had was a large cheek area.
Saw it in Wally World of all places.

Just a few photos of my 2nd bike:

9 speed shifter bike. 70cc 2 stroke. Geared to do 40mph pretty easily.

Working on finishing up engine mounts and fabricating an intake to fit the Dellorto flat slide carburetor. Smile Then, its getting a tuned pipe exhaust to improve efficiency in the rpm range that I ride.
