OK, here's the situation. I'm getting ready to have the front locker and 30 spline axles installed in the front. I am planning on eventually putting a locker in the back. Should I go ahead and install the rear locker now? If I do, should I regear? If I regear, what ratio should I go with to run 33 tires? Keep in mind I'm planning either an Atlas 4.3 or a Teralow 4:1 transfer case upgrade in early spring.

Thanks!

W/ such a low range planned for the future, I would think that any gearing change would only be needed for improved running on the highway.

What's the existing gearing and how does it pull now w/ 32's( or31's)?

4.56 gearing for the 33's and definitely don't do a front locker before doing a rear one. if you do, you'll need to rewire the switches (not a big deal), But with the wiring harness, the ARB system will not allow you to engage the front locker without the rear already engaged if running two lockers. The rear end is stronger than the front and a rear locker works much better on hillclimbs than a front due to the weight transfer.

4.56's might be a little deep for your 31's. That said, Nissans have 4.625's or deeper for those same tires...they just rev a little higher on the highway.

If you have that damn Dana 35C in the rear. I would go ahead and put the front locker in since you already have it. I would swap out the rear axle for something else before I put a locker and gears in it though. I have a few friends that did this and it worked just fine for them. Chug

Nope, will be gtg.
You can't really compare Nissan gearing to Jeep, the Nissan engine although realiabe, is anemic compared to the Jeep 4 liter.
Just get 4.88s and be done with it.

Yep--have Dana 44 rear with 30 spline axles. I'm leaning to going ahead and doing the rear as well--it will just set me back one month as I replenish the "toy fund". Right now, with 31's, the sheep cruises comfortably at 65 on the highway. Lo range is 2.72:1 and gears are 3.73:1. If I put in 4.10s or 4.56 gears, will I have to go with 33's to cruise comfortably at 65?

Do you have a tach? Mathematically you can figure the rpm differences

Define comfortably?
The 4 liter will run 3k rpms all day and not suffer a bit.
I have 4.10 with 31s and have run 32s, wish I would have went lower.

It runs 3K right now with 31s at 65. You're right, the engine doesn't complain a bit at 3K. So maybe 4.56 and go with 33's?

3.73's? If that's what you have, you'd be running about 3450 rpm at 65 with 33's and 4.56 gears. 4.10's aren't enough of a change from 3.73's IMO to make it worth while, but with 4.10's you'd be turning about 3100 rpms at 65 with 33's. That's pretty close to stock.

Keep in mind that if your speedo is reading 65 at that 3000 rpms on 31's, you're probably going more like 71 or 72 since the 31's are taller than what the Jeep probably came with.

It's too fast for a sheep! At that speed its kind of like driving in a high speed outhouse. BTW, I've got a phone number for a guy here in Cottonwood who does all the axles and diff upgrades for the sheep herd in this area. I'm gonna get his opinion too and see what he can do the job for.
