OK... Why does KIA remind me of a Chia Pet?
Ch..Ch..ch..chia or Ki..Ki..Ki..Kia Anyway... I have a buddy that has a 2001 Sportage. He's 99% sure he’s got a leak between the tranny and the engine. We're pretty sure we have to pull the tranny to replace the gasket. I have no idea how to do this job and was wondering if any one did or would be willing to help us out. Did I mention he's got two kids... Any help will be appreciated... -- MattMan555 -- << 2000 Nissan X >> <<A lift and big tires >> << Now with Urine Protection >> |

Yes it's a KIA.
I'll double check, but I asked him the same question and he said it wasn't covered. -- MattMan555 -- << 2000 Nissan X >> <<A lift and big tires >> << Now with Urine Protection >> |

Have your buddy go bug the dealer! It should be a covered fix for another few years.
FOund this.....................................................................................> "For 2001, Kia has added even more value to Sportage with its new Long Haul Warranty. Looks like that 99% sure was wrong on the tranny..
I just got an update from him... "The leak is actually coming from the oil pan. So I'm working on re-sealing that. Removing the oil pan was a lot more difficult than I thought it would be though. Instead of a gasket, they use a silicone sealant that holds the thing together like super glue. I missed getting the 10 year 100,000 mile warranty by 2 months, and I'm over the mileage for my extended warranty." Weird... Never heard of Silicone sealant for an oil pan... -- MattMan555 -- << 2000 Nissan X >> <<A lift and big tires >> << Now with Urine Protection >> |

Funny you mention that...
Just got this in... "I think so. Although I failed on my first try. After I put it back together, it was leaking from the exact same spot. I talked to one of the service guys from KIA and he said either I didn't clean the pan well enough or there is a crack somewhere. He told me they usually use a grinder on it to get it down to bare metal. I'm going to try using my rotary tool with a wire brush to clean it off and hope I don't find a crack." Datz - What did you use to clean it with? -- MattMan555 -- << 2000 Nissan X >> <<A lift and big tires >> << Now with Urine Protection >> |

I havent cleaned mine or put it back on yet. I would say a gasket scraper or razor blade would work fine. That's what I've always used. He's gotta degrease the surfaces... use some windex (or some other degreaser) on a rag to get any oil off. Then apply new RTV.. also, he needs to let the new RTV cure before he starts it up.
