I am thinking of buying a Tacoma TRD double cab. Ya I know...buy a Nissan. If we had Patrol pickups here in the USA I would already have a Nissan truck.

Thing is I just don't like the way the Nissan trucks look these days. For that matter I don't even like Toyotas these days, looks wise. But I do like the Tacoma from 2001-2004 and that is what I am looking at buying.

I saw this on one recently for sale. What is it smog gear?

id avoid a vehicle like that. i dont think many people would put a supercharger on without having the intention of tear-assin around and beating the thing pretty good.

I'd be willing to bet underneath those cables says TRD, they are good stuff and built to last.

I am buying it for work. Pretty much decided it fits what I need size wise and all that. Don't want another full size truck right now and will be buying outright so no finacing crap.

premium fuel doesn't matter, it is a tax write off, company truck and all. Didn't they make these with a factory supercharger? Factory s/c would have a TRD boost gauge? Super charger sounds pretty awesome to me! lol

Anyone know much about the Tacomas? Such as what is the SR5? Prerunner? Limited? Timing belt and water pump only probs with these trucks? $17k a good price for these with 65k miles and super clean? Found em as low as $13k but have lot's of miles and not as clean.

As far as I know, they didn't make them factory supercharged. They are aftermarket add-ons kinda like NISMO.

As for the other stuff, I have no idea.

Yeah I don't think any of them were "factory" supercharged, but I think it may have been a dealer-installed option. However, I've heard a lot of good things about them, seems like it's a quality setup. And who can argue with more power?

The TRD's are factory supercharged. My friend has one just like it. You can even make out the TRD logo underneath the hose on the top.

TRD makes a supercharger for the trucks. The 4x4's never came directly from the factory with one on, it was a dealer add on piece. Nissan was the only one to do a compact directly from the factory with a SC. The TRD supercharger is a 4k kit. For 16k I would say the truck is worth the money. The TRD supercharger actually adds 50hp so its not as much of a waist as the Nissan one.

As or the trim levels,
x-runner = 2wheel drive
Prerunner = 2wheel drive built on a 4x4 frame, Think desert runner in Nissan
SR5 = about every truck they make. Comes with allot of factory interior stuff and is the trim level they add the TRD package. The TRD pkg adds a rear locker, shocks, and wheels. Kind of like the NISMO trim on the new Frontiers. Think SE in Nissan
Limited = Leather loaded, think LE in NISSAN

well I am buying a 2004 double cab TRD. And then I am going to supercharge it!

I found a few things out about them. They didn't come factory supercharged, it was a dealer install option. The s/c kit from TRD runs about $2500. TRD actually sells a number of nice bolt on mods. Other than the timing belt and water pump @ 90k miles htey don't seem to have any probs. Typical small stuff here and there is all I can dig up. From my experience all cars have those things.

Shouldn't be a prob supercharging the one I am buying. Having it compression tested first. I will be doing the 7th injector kit too which should keep the fueling where it needs to be and gives 20-25 more hp! Looks like once I do the s/c and other engine mods it will be at about 265hp. That is nice I think. I am going to have the Toyota dealership I am buying the truck from do all this...

I know I should buy a Nissan but I just don't like the Frontiers. Mostly it is the look of them I don't like. A Titan would be ok but if buying full size I will buy Chevy. I am not in the market for full size so Tacoma it is!

Like I say the truck is for work, not like I am buying it to off-road. I will be road tripping in it a bunch this winter too. Any ways, the truck plus mods I do are a tax write off. So is the premium fuel!!

My dad has a 2003 TRD 4x4 Xtra cab, and it's been a great truck for him. You won't go wrong with that vintage Taco. The new ones are ugly tho, and a lot bigger.

I had a 2002 supercharged s-runner. Those chargers really add some punch! Plan on buying new tires. I had to get a new rear set after on 6 months and 3K miles Big Grin

By the way, Fudd. Do you have any doors or at least window frames laying around? I'm about to make a soft top and the door frames (my half doors are killing me).
