What's involved in converting an SBC to EFI?

Obviously I'll need a high pressure fuel pump and a crapload of wire.....

Are there kits for a 67-72 Chevy? The engine I have is a 400...no idea what year, with a 4bbl manifold. How miserable is the wiring for these kits?

I dreamt I was a muffler last night. When I woke up, I was exhausted.

Holley has pretty much plug 'n' go kits that will fit a small block. TBI or multi-point. You're never find anything that lists as a kit specifically for that truck. You find something for the engine, then make sure you supply enough fuel for it.

What does a kit go for, and how do you tune it?

2-3k usually, and depending on the kit, either a laptop based tuning program, or a hand held programmer.

I have a feeling Andy doesnt want that much fun. I have a feeling Andy wants an afternoon of plugging stuff in, then years of enjoying improved driveability and increased fuel mileage. =)

I know a few people that ran the holley setup on sbc's and HATED it. One buddy went from a 14.4 1/4 mile to a 13.1 switching from the holley efi setup back to a double pumper. He sold the setup to another guy, and he hated it just as much. Only application I have heard of people being pleased with them is in stockish motor off road vehicles.

Also, megasquirt is a REALLY cool setup, especially with all the new versions they came out with since I was into it. But for a vehicle you dont want to be constantly tuning/compensating while you drive it, they are not practical at all. Great for a race car, terrible for a DD. If you look at the success to failure rate with m/s, about 90% of the people who actually get the setup together end up going to a different managment system once they attempt to tune it.

Its all about AEM EMS!!

Well, I'm not dropping $2-3k into this. I can slap a brand new carb on there for $400.

Not sure what the issue is actually. Just recently started running rough, particularly after its up to temperature. Getting the occasional backfire through the header. Thing is, it was running great and this started suddenly....I haven't made any carb adjustments, so I'm hesitant to go start messing with that. Honestly feels like a vacuum leak. Surging a bit on the highway like it's not firing on all 8.

I'd pull the carb off and disassemble/clean it out. Unless you drive it every day, this is usually a yearly thing with every vehicle I have with a carb. (My Unimog requires this every 6-8 months to stay running nicely) You've probably got some gunk in a jet or a passage in there is partially clogged up.

The truck does get driven frequently...not daily, but several times a week. This just started.

The carb is some sort of holley. Haven't looked closely enough to look for a model# yet. Electric choke...run of the mill. I hit it with some carb cleaner last night right down the throat with it running. I found the ground wire on the electric choke was loose. Tightened that up. Still have the issue. Since it's more noticable when the truck is up to temp, it makes me wonder if the choke is sticking, however, when I pull the air cleaner off the butterfly is all the way open with the engine warm. A stuck choke would explain the rich condition when it's up to temp.

The choke could be it. Is the holley a double pumper or a vac secondary?

heh...dunno. I've had the air cleaner off the thing for exactly 5 minutes since I owned it. I'll be messing with it tonight and will figure it out then...how the hell does an electric choke even work....

You got wires, and you got a spring inside that expands or contracts based on intake temps that closes the butterfly for a rich mixture when its cold and opens it up and leans it out when the engine warms up. What does the electric do?
