Got a new truck. I'm getting rid of the '99 Frontier (don;t like the payments, and I'm putting too many miles on it anyway). Will still have a '93 hardbody though. New truck is a bone stock '87 with a carbureted 4cyl. Not my first choice, but options around here are severely limited for older Nissan or Toyota 4wd trucks- when a decent one comes up for sale, it'll literally be gone in less than a day. Anyway, here's the truck:

Nice man. Yes car payments suck.
Does it have a warn winch mount on the front of it? |

Yep... but the bumper is mounted to the frame with two pieces of 3/8" flat steel. You can just see the pieces at the very bottom of the bumper in the picture (they attach with the two bolts at the bottom). The upper mounts are basically just bolted to the stock front bumper. It would need a lot of reinforcement to be able to handle the slightest off-center force.
I might be getting rid of the bumper. I already tossed the Caravan camper. It was well-used, plus it weighed about 300 lb. After getting rid of that, I'm amazed at how much power this truck has. My trip home from work every day includes a 10 mile long, 2000 ft. elevation gain stretch of highway, and without the camper, I'm able to cruise up at over 60 if I wanted to. It's literally able to do the hill almost as easily as my Frontier with the V6. I'm sure the small tires help, but still, it can handle a lot more than I thought it would be able to. The engine was reportedly rebuilt 30k ago, but I wonder if maybe they upgraded the cams or something. It seems to have a lot more power than my old hardbody with the Z24i. It may have the engine builder 22r RV head package on it. You really can't tell unless you took the head off to look at the valves they are usually 1mm oversized.
BTW you can swap to fuel injection on your truck fairly easily since yours is above a 84. The 22r engines 83-up have the ports and bolt holes for the fuel injection intake manifold. Wiring it is fairly plug nd play fom what I was told by a guy who did one to a 85 runner. Mine isn't because the connectors are different on the 79-83 trucks. The other thing the previous owner may have upgraded the gears in it to 4.30's. You should be able to run a 33x10.50 on stock 15x7 wheels with minimal lift with that year truck too. I saw one with 35's with minimal lift but the guy cut the hell out of it to fit them. The nice thing is you could use gears out of the junkyard the 92-95 automatic v6 toyota trucks and 4 runners with a 31" tire option came with 4.88 gears just look for the G144 code on the vin plate on the door sill. Also the 90-95 v6 standards with 31" tires came with 4.56's the axle code is G254. That would be a option for you later down the road with a taller tire. Other than that gears are cheap it's about $500 for a gear package f/r with new bearings and master installs. Here's a deal from randys ring and pinion http://randysringandpinion.com/default.asp?pid=2&pageid=154 4.88's for your truck for $486 with master installs f/r. Try and specify you want percision or us gear brand gears put in the box. I got motive brand gears in my yukon boxes which are ok too. It's IFS any plans for SAS or just keeping it as it is?? You might check out www.frontrangeoffroadfab.com they have a nice winch bumper available for your truck it's about the price of a TJM T-17 but alot sturdier. Anyways it's a nice project loads of tech on them over on 4x4wire.com, yotatech.com and priate4x4. |

I'd be surprised if the truck has been re-geared. It appears to be bone stock in almost every way. Even engine upgrades are doubtful, but since the engine has been rebuilt, that seemed more likely than anything else.
I would like to run 31" tires, but probably not much larger than that. The current tires only have a few thousand miles left on them, so I should be getting some new ones here pretty soon. My axle code says G292, so I should have 3.10 gears right now. But, as you mentioned, gear options are plentiful and cheap, so I imagine I'll be doing something about the gears soon after getting new tires. I am definitely interested in the EFI swap. I thought this would be a necessity eventually, considering the elevation changes I'm dealing with, but the truck performs a lot better than I thought it would as-is, and hopefully the larger heavier tires won't kill that too much. At any rate, at least parts are plentiful around here. It looks like 3 of the largest Toyota salvage yards are just over the hill from me in Sacramento. One of them, TAPRecycling (taprecycling.com), has pictures of ~100 84-88 toyotas at their yard right now... I was amazed to see so many trucks of that era in one place. I didn;t even look at the earlier years, but they've probably got a lot of those too, but I imagine you've probably already heard of the place if you've had your truck for a while. Personally I visit local yards TAP recycling is too expensive to me and some have gotten some crappy stuff from them as well thewre have been a few threads on other boards about them.
Yup G292 is 4.10's a 2 pinion 4 cyl diff. Hey a clinometer would be cool on that truck. You can find them in older 4 runners alot of them came with them as a option on the SR5 models. |
