I usually change the cap/rotor/wires at the same time.
Label all the wires with tape and a number...leave them all on the cap...remove the cap and use it as a guide for putting the new wires and cap on. I've had trouble with an I4...just getting the wires on right...if I don't do it this way. 1986 720 Z24i KC ST 5 spd 4X4 |

HERE is the piece of the manual that describes the procedure for an '02 Xterra. Your timing value is probably different (my '00 is supposed to be 15 degrees BTDC).
Anyway, the basic procedure is this: 1) Unplug the throttle position sensor so the computer can't mess with the timing 2) start the truck - make sure it is warmed up 3) connect a timing light - a timing light looks like a gun and it works like a strobe light. You hook up the power wires to the battery with alligator clips and then clamp the sensing clamp onto the #1 spark plug wire. Then when you squeeze the trigger the light will flash every time the #1 spark plug fires 4) Point the flashing timing light down at the harmonic balancer (while the engine is running). There are several notches or grooves cut into the balancer and you're trying to see how these are in relation to the little arrow that sticks out above the balancer when #1 fires. On mine, there are 5 marks - the far left mark is top dead center and each mark to the right of that indicates an increment of 5 degrees - so since mine is supposed to be 15 degrees before top dead center, I adjust the timing until the arrow is pointing to the fourth mark. 5) You actually adjust the timing by loosening the bolt that holds the distributor down - then you can grab the whole distributor and literally twist it left and right to adjust when the plugs fire. That's about it |

Right on kaiser. That was a very clear instruction.
Im going to have to check on my harmonic balancer tho coz right now im seeing only 4 notch and that might be all or a few is dirty thats why im not seeing it but its set just a little bit pass the 4th noth that why I assumed the other day that its on 17 deg BTDC. My 93 pathy has to be on 12Deg BTDC .so if thats all the notch thats supposed to be in there then im off by 5Deg. Thanks Kaiser. |
