Try hitting the spot where the ball joint bolts go through from the side with the BFH. Whack it good. A bottle jack pushing up on the lower bolt might help too.

On a dana axle, both balljoints face up, so a jack underneath the lower doesn't do anything. I always try and leave one of the nuts on (usually on the lower balljoint), but loose. then hammer the crap out of the top of the top balljoint. Guaranteed you mess up the threads, but I've found if I'm pulling the knuckle, I usually need new balljoints anyway. usually takes 3-5 hits with a 5lbs hand sledge.

Plan on new balljoints too. Those will need to be pressed in. On a D44, a special socket is needed to torque down the threaded sleeve that slides over the upper balljoint. Not sure how a D30 is set up.

Compared to a normal d44, thats upside down. I don't know if some axles come like that, or if someone is running the inner C and knuckle upside down for some reason, but a d44 has both nuts on top.

well my Ball joints have to be pressed upwards, the lower one is shot, upper is ok but while I have it this far apart I will just replace it. Borrowed a tool from auto zone and its not getting them out, so I may need to borrow your tool reddog. I will let you know later on in the day.

EDIT: DRIP IS RIGHT, AFTER LOOKING AT THE NEW PARTS, IT NEEDS TO GO DOWN, THX DRIP

Edit: lower and upper Ball joint is out, thx again

Both set ups are out there in the jeep world...

"... the older style that have small holes in them into which the ball joint studs are pressed. Another way of describing it, is that the ball joints point up, where the body of the ball joint is pressed into the knuckle, and the studs point up and go through the knuckle yoke. CJs, Scouts, Pickup trucks, Full-size Jeeps, and just about every Dana44 front axle has these yokes. However, XJ,YJ,MY,TJ, and ZJ models Jeeps do not they have the knuckle yokes that hold the ball joint, with the ball joint pointing down"
Here's the pireate thread that talks about it.

Balljoint press. It's the only way to do it right.

You can borrow mine or you can go to HF and buy one for $30. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=38335

You may be able to "rent" one from autozone/checker too.

All balljoints press out downwards, otherwise the weight of the truck would try to press them out.

It took like a whole minute to google "Jeep Cherokee Dana front axle ball joint" and copy/paste that paragraph. I was really looking to see whether Robert GOAT'd his axle or it might have come that way from the factory.

Sorry to postjack, so Robert, how's it going?
