Just had my slave cylinder go, when it went it popped the clip off that holds the throwout bering in place. Well I'm ready to drop the tranny, and figured that since its out I might as well do the whole clutch. Somewhere in the last 2 years I lost my repair manual. And since I have had the truck for almost 8 years now and it's never been done, I should swap out the old gear oil and transfer case fluid. But I need to know what type of automatic trans fluid to get for the t-case and how much it holds, also for the manual trans gear oil as well, for my 1991 se v6 4x4 truck.

You don't need to use ATF in the Tcase. A good GL5 75W90 or 80W90 will work fine.

In the transmission, you MUST use a GL4 lube (specifically GL4, not one that's advertised to replace all GL's. Napa carries it in 2 qt jugs, and your local Dodge dealer carries the Castrol synthetic NV4500 gear oil (GL4) if you want a full synthetic. The syn is pricey though.

When you fill it up, jack up the left side of the truck a ways so you can get an extra 1/2-full quart in there....the fill plug is too low on HB manuals and that can cause the bearings to starve for oil on steep inclines.

I found GL-4 at AutoZone. It was the cheap Coastal brand.

Carquest also carries GL-4.

Dittos to what DR said about the T-case. Nissan spec is to use ATF, BUT they used to recommend gear oil. Datz here mentioned he was using it and I tried it based on his experience. I was using synthetic ATF in there since its supposed to take heat better than regular...Still it was loke water coming out. I poured some gear oil (also synthetic) thru it witht he drain plug out to remove the last of the AFT then filled it with the gear oil 75W-90 Amsoil is what I'm using but any 75W-90 will do. It will hold up under the stress fo 4wd way better than ATF ever could.

Yep, for the Tcase, ATF wont hold up to the heat of 4 wheeling.. The T-case is much happier with 90w gear oil. Mine has been fine since I changed out the ATF.

As an experiment in my truck, I changed the ATF before AZ Run 4 or 5 and put ATF back in. After the run, I drained it and it was like water it was so thin. I put in the 90w gear oil after that and the t-case seems a lot happier.

Bit confused here guys. I can use gear oil on my transmission and Tcase instead of ATF ?
Only difference is in the transmission it has to be a GL4 and on the Tcase is GL5 right?

On my diff is also a GL5?

Thanks

Just remember do NOT use gearoil in your AUTOMATIC transmission. LOL. It would be bad. VERY bad. Seems simple enough, but I've seen people do it.

I've never specificaly used GL-4 in my tranny(had it loaded with Royal Purple), and have never had any problems with it(until I ran my tranny dry).

I FINALLY saw a good explanation of why to use which thing... (assuming the guy was right... porsche966 on XOC)... He said that you're supposed to use the same thing that you put in your transmission - so if the seal between the two fails you're not mixing incompatible fluids...

So if you've got an auto tranny, use ATF in the tcase. If you've got a manual, use GL4 Wink
