I think my rear main seal is starting to leak. It looks like oil is dripping from the weep hole in the bellhousing of the tranny. Clutch feels fine tho - I don't think it is spitting oil on there.

Is there any kind of additive I can use for a "crutch" until I can afford to pull the tranny and replace it? I will do a clutch and flywheel too at that time... that is why I am wanting to postpone it for awhile if at all possible.

Mine leaked pretty bad a couple years ago, but now its stopped leaking. Confused

I wouldnt worry about it too much unless the dripping oil bugs you.

Motor oil has seal conditioners in it, so a change couldn't hurt any.

Are you sure it's motor oil and not leaking from the front seal on the transmission?

Sounds like an excuse to pull the tranny, and what better time to install gears? Big Grin

I've had good luck with the high milage oils getting seals to reseal themselves.

It takes a few thousand miles before it works but the rear main seal on my altima started leaking after I switched to Mobil 1 (at ~85K). The next oil change I put in the high milage stuff and by the time I changed the oil again it sealed back up.

I've put ~100K on the car since then without leakage from the rear main.

Hey guys thanks for the input...

The only other thing I can think of is that when I went out on strike, I haven't been driving nearly as much, and most of the driving I've done, is local, short trips. Also, it has been significantly colder outside lately, and I'm thinking the colder temps could also be causing the seal to shrink a little.

I am gonna try to start driving it more to make sure it isn't sitting.

Unless its pouring out, I wouldn't bother. A drip while its sitting overnight wont hurt anything. Chances are, it'll reseal itself with more driving. These trucks don't like to sit, thats for sure.

Looks like there are quite a few addtitive products out there. Whether they actually work or not I'll don't know. Here's the first two I found on Google. Might be worth a try?

Pretty much all of the VG33E Xterras have (or will have) rear main seal leaks... just one of those inevitable things - like cracked exhaust manifolds. I got mine replaced while it was still under warranty and the new one has held up so far.

As everyone else said - as long as you keep an eye on your engine oil level it doesn't really hurt anything.

Mine has leaked for a few years but hasn't gotten worse. The underside is getting really nasty though.

It quit leaking after a 4wheelin trip once, but it was just cause there was mud in the cracks.
