has anyone rebuilt the tranny in a 720 4x4 (mine is an 84)? i think i have a bent shift fork as it pulls in 2nd, 4th, and reverse, but none of the forward shifted gears...also there is no bushing in the shifter for the ball end...has anyone had this problem? could the shifter bushing be the problem? how difficult/expensive is it to replace a shift fork? also, what is the trick to getting the tranny out of the truck? do you have to remove the front diff? thanks in advance

Eyes Replace the bushing, before you do anything else. It makes a BIG difference in shifting!!! Chug

Your nylon bushing is probably laying in the bottom of the tranny. Just get a new one from the dealer. It should only be a few dollars.

Just pop the new one on and see what that gets you.

If the 720 is like the HB, you will have to remove the t-bars and t-bar crossmember to get the tranny back far enough to lower it.

I suggest you pick up a service manual for it. Money well spent IMHO.

It's a fine line between clever and stupid.

The front dif and t bars do not come out. Just lower the tcase and remove all 3 driveshafts. Slide the trans back and rotate so the starter hoop slides through the tbars. Do it a dozen times on 620s and 720s. Never removed the tbars.

I later put a 2wd trans in my 4wd 720. It was 7" longer (shortened the middle shaft). I then had to lower the frt diff. Never actually removed it.
