True.Placement is eveything.A friend of mine hydrolocked his '96 Z going over what appeared to be a shallow puddle(turned out to be a foot deep.)My Frontier never goes offroad so CAI is great, but my Pathy(and eventually my Xterra)will get snorkels. And Checo is right, there is no such thing as a CAI in the summer in Az,unless its 4:00AM in Payson. Cool

well I wheel deep water and mud almost everytime we wheel, and have ALWAYS run a cai...and never hydrolocked my truck(S)... they're a great upgrade to ANY 4x4... of course a snorkel is better, but cai's are more than ok for offroad... it all comes down how you drive into/hit the water/mud hole... you cant do it at 20mph... thats just plain dumb, and asking for it... haha

oh, and chevyman... I think SOME 2wd titans have a little outlet that goes to the driver-side fender-well that some may consider "cold air", but the 4x4s don't... no cold air for me... but I do love my Nismo... Wink

Amen.I've never thought of wheeling in terms of Paris to Dakar. It's not a race.On any new trail,I stay to the back and watch how everybody else approaches an obstacle. Chug

Ah, that explains it. Yeah, mine pulls from between the fender and the liner.

Ultimately, a snorkel fed Volant is the way to go..

There seems to be a lot of confusion on what a CAI is. CAI is COLD AIR. Not that I had to describe what the acronym stood for.

Most after market intakes are not CAI, meaning they are open air intakes rather and alomost every single one of them has a heat shield so finding an open air intake with a heat shield is not going to be a difficult task. These heat shields are ineffective nonetheless and these open air intakes should be called HAI-Hot air intakes.

As far as the aftermarket goes for your Frontier, I am almost 100% positive it is that same as the X. As far as the X, there is only one brand that is sealed. That is Volant.

I have seen volant and I have installed it. IMO it is not very good at all and there is no way that I am sold on the product. First, it comes with crappy instructions, there really isn't a seal there at all so I have no ideal where the idea that it is awesome mated with a snorkel comes from. The top is know to leak and there is missing/insufficient hardware.

Ok, so this is what I would look into if I were you. Look here:

http://nissan4wheelers.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/728603133/m/32510608241

This IS a cold air intake especially when mated with a snorkel. Cheap, very effective, better seal than a Volant.

Oh and by the way, almost all vehicles come stock with a cold air intake. People are stuck after market brands and actually add the newly coined HAI to it. Think about it. Everyone wants a CAI instead of their stock intake, so they take off their stock intake and put on a HAI. At first, I took off my stock CAI, and threw on an aftermarket HAI. You will notice that none of the companies call it a cold air intake, but call it an intake rather, and in the case of K & N, they cleverly called it a FIPK (Fuel Injection Performance Kit) <--Nifty!

Cleaning the MAF is really easy. Remove the 2 screws and unclip the harness. Take a few Q-tips soaked in 91% Isopropyl Alcohol and gently clean the small wires. It's also a good idea to swab down the connectors in the harness as well. Let it all dry and then reinstall. 'Bout a 15 minute job at the most.
