Can't hurt, but don't expect big power gains. You might get a little more HP on the top end.

I want the horsepower gain more than a sound, is there one that would improve the most (reasonable priced)

One cat back is as good as another. It doesn't matter what brand you use, heck I think the best is just the muffler shop special, where they just make their own. I had mine done with my headers, but that was only cause my muffler was shot anyways, if you don't need a new muffler, I wouldn't bother with a cat back.

Opening up exhaust gives you a little more top end horsepower, but usually at the expense of some bottom end torque, so don't go crazy.
You'll get a much better deal at a muffler shop replacing the whole works - cat included, than you will buying an off the shelf cat back system. For a VG30, start at the Y pipe and install a 2.5" cat and exhaust with a high flow muffler of some sort. Get the shop to incorporate as few bends as possible. I used a glasspack on my 4 banger...it's a little loud, but it woke up the top end of the engine along with a good intake. Flowmaster makes good mufflers too. 1998 Frontier 4x4 seriously built 2002 Xterra 4x4 still stock Please help STOP urban sprawl! |

I have a Magna Flow Performance muffler and 2.5 in pipe coming from the cat...
Although, my engine is a KA24DE. I have a noticable difference in my top end coupled with a modified air intake. Like Andy said, I did lose a little off the bottom end... no biggie. I had my system installed at Midas for about 140 bucks or so here in Tucson... ----------------------------- My name is Greg, and I am front axle deprived... Mike,
The place is called Wade's Discount Mufflers & Brakes. Their number is 480 854 0988, and they're at 3130 E. Main St. #11 in Mesa (between Lindsay and Val Vista on the north side of the street). J and me both had work done there and were impressed with the reasonable cost and the speedy service. My truck was in there for about 3 hours. 1998 Frontier 4x4 seriously built 2002 Xterra 4x4 still stock Please help STOP urban sprawl! |

I have a 2.25inch Magnaflow cat back, and the AC(JWT) air intake. The sound of both comebined is sweet. Performance is noticeble, at high rpms. My truck has more umpf on the highway.
