Camping there is a little bit of a problem, as they don't want you on the trails and the camp grounds there suck. I know of some spots though, but there is no way to avoid some people, the place is always busy with mt. bikers and Heepers. Smile

That's cool, I just will not stay in a campground, that is really just a remote trailer park. That kinda thing really bothers me.

So, are there some areas that I can go to camp, that aren't campgrounds or cabins, and that I don't have to reserve in advance?

Pick up the Moab offroad trails book by HG Wells. It will show the trails and areas for camping. Those where you can camp in the wild away from folks and also the campgrounds.

Weellll, there is this one place I know of.. It's about 15-20 minutes south of town, very private, no reservations necessary, very primitive...

sounds like my kind of place. as long as I know there are places to go, I'm not too worried.

There's been some misinformation posted in another thread here, so, to clear things up..
From the organizers of GONE-

Moab can be as expensive or as cheap as you want to go.
Some costs that can't be avoided are some park fees. You may want to budget about $40 for the week.
Camping can be free or at a private campground at around $20 a night.
Food, kind of depends on what you want to eat. There is a market in town as well as a bunch of places to eat out.
Gas prices are going be in line with what you are paying for in Honolulu.

There are no fees for goneMoab, but we are going to be selling t-shirts (about $15 each, details to follow). We are also going to have a raffle at $10 a ticket.

If you drink then figure on paying a few extra bucks for booze.

Good to know, I will be wanting a shirt and the raffle sounds cool. I also read the site and it wants folks to register, and they mention no fees. Question though, is it possible that some of the run participants will be skipping the mellow runs and going on alternative trails? I mean, I want to be with some of the folks at all times, but don't feel like running easy stuff. I wanna run the hard stuff because my rig needs challenging obstacles.

Xtoolbox (you may remember him (Brian) from recently on AZRUNVI) will be there along with maybe a dozen other SAS rigs to run the harder stuff. You're gonna' have a blast either way. I won a set of the Staun Beadlocks last year too Big Grin in the raffle. I traded 'em for some sweet sockets though smiley4.

For those going this year, a few (well my wife and I, and couple of others atm) are doing a fullday rafting trip on Wed 24th instead of wheeling. I know my wife will need a break by then.. It is $37 each with group of 8 or more, or $41 otherwise.

Here is the thread Rafting 5/24
