my first thought would be that it'd be fantastic to see a nissan engine trans/transfercase combo in that classic patrol, just to keep as much of it nissan as possible. but after i thought about it for a minute, i'm guessing one of the biggest decisions is rear driveshaft length. if you get a drivetrain too long it might be rough to have much of a lift with a short rear driveshaft. there are tranny transfer case combos out there which are very short, and ideal for short wheel base vehicles.
i wouldn't go with a ford 9' rear, unless you spend the $ on a high pinion for it, and that kind of takes away from the reason most people want a ford 9', which is the price.
i got my isuzu dana 44 with new disk brakes and precision gears all for around $600. the ARB air locker was extra, but anyway for that price it's hard to beat. it's a bit narrower, i'm guessing 54 inches?? but maybe it's the right width under a patrol. in my frontier it sits fine. it's a six lug though, if that's your thing.
i wish i had a nissan patrol?! santa? anyone?? big grin

Yota axles seem like they'd be a bit on the narrow side for a Patrol...How do they compare with EB axles?

1998 Frontier 4x4 seriously built
2002 Xterra 4x4 still stock

If i am not mistaken, aren't the yota axles about four and a half inches narrower than the EB 44's.

My Yota axles are the EXACT same width as my old Nissan axles.

Wow! Thanks, folks - lots to think about. My dialup was down last night so I'm replying as I have time on and off today.

Lon Wlf, first let me say while I haven't seen it in action, I've always thought your truck looks awesome with that axle up front. While I take your point about the low pinion of the Ford 9", I wouldn't want to go with the H233B for the reasons Datz mentioned (mostly 'cause gears are pricey). I guess I can't depend on them coming out with transfer case gears for the Nissan case but want to look into the possibility of a dual tcase setup. I guess if I went with the d44/9" combo I could get 5.13/5.14 respectively. I could see maybe putting a D44 in back but where the heck did they put one that is similar width to the EB 58"? I would probably want to go with the Manual tranny. I know plenty of folks feel auto is superior but I just feel like I have more control and feel more in touch with the stick.

John, where are you looking at gears? I've got a few bookmarks but am wondering where you go to look.

McFly: I know that's been done, how far back does that put the xfer case rear flange? The Patrol stock wheelbase is 86.6 inches - somewhat shorter than 100". Are you talking about pre-86 toy axles? They are around 55" wide, right? I felt like a little wider axles for stability would be an improvement since I'm lifting it. Also, I expected you to put the lie to my impression that Toy axles aren't as strong without modification. wink Oh yeah, so as not to dissapoint, I couldn't find my flamethrower but this is for you:

I looked at summitracing.com They are around $126 per gearset for whatever ratio you want.

Yota axles would defintely be way too narrow for the Patrol. The Patrol is at least a foot wider than the Pathy. In fact, the EB axles are almost too narrow as well. I'm looking into custom offset wheels to widen the track a little to help make it a little more stable. In the rear with the EB Ford 9", the 36" swampers are about 1" from the frame on each side with them mounted on 15x7 wheels. Definitely limits flex like that, as the tires rub heavily on the inner fenders in the rear... frown

I'm gonna see if I can get some 2" BS 15x8s to get the wheels about 2-3" from the frame. Should really allow it to flex then.

Well, it sounds too narrow. There is a 1987 Trooper for free in the paper, along with a 1976 Toy 2wd. wink I believe the Trooper has Isuzu Corporate under it front and rear. What year Isuzu is your Dana 44 out of?

Thanks, I was looking a Summit, too, among other places...
So, it's sounding like I might get away with a slightly wider axle? eek I am correct about the ~58" EB axle width, right? That's about how wide yours are? If I could use, say, a 60" axle, I would have more choices... My concern was with minimizing the amount of outer rear wheelwell I'll need to trim. In a perfect world it would be zero but I'm not adamant about that. Also, I don't want to put giant fender flares on to make it legal but I guess I could put some kind of flares on there. smile This is good for me - I've been needing to bounce my ideas around and I can already see some preconceptions loosening up. I just want to make sure when you see it you KNOW it's a Patrol and not maybe some chopped up FJ40 or "Jungle Jeep". mad I mean there are only so many KL-60's out there... wink

Well, it sounds like we're doing a run by that "Crazy John's Stream" area in SW VT next Sunday if you want to combine your efforts. Don't worry too much about it but it is outside right now. I was too lazy to lift it again.
Are you adamadam or punkigor on the list?
