True. You have to get into the real EARLY D44 axles to get 2 piece (early 10 spline CJ Dana 44, pre-'71).

Gathering of parts is taking longer than expected. Seems like companies are slower at shipping after x-mas.

1. Axles(1k) paid
2. Gears 267.48
3. youkon install kit. 173.50
4. R&P install $350
5. calmini front leaf hanger and bell shackle mount $289.00
6. front waggy springs $124.00
7.Rear toyota leaf springs $200 (4 wheel parts)
8. Front drive shaft
9. Rear drive shaft
10. Custom ordered brake lines
11. willwood brake valve.
12. Wheels and tires $400
13. Ford shock towers $27 (online dealer)
14. Stel plate 59.94 (lowes)
15. dana 44 simple axle swap kit. $120 (ruffstuff specialties)
16. Front axle leaf spring plates and u-bolt kit $100 (foothill offrod)
17. front axle shock tabs. 29.99 (ballistic fabrication)

Total so fare 3080.97

Prices listed is what I paid for the items. I will list prices after each item is purchased.

What is the HUB size on a dana 44 axle. Would help me out a lot on my search for wheels. Tires will be 35 BFG at's or 37 Goodyear MT/R. My thing about 37 is this truck is my daily driver. I don't think a tire taller than 35 is worth my money on the road every day.

Let me just say, I feel your pain on the slow shipping. But I am thinking this is mostly a Nissan thing, especially with Cal Mini. I ordered 54" rear springs and hangers from All Pro Off Road and had them in 2 days. Here are a couple of pics of the mock up using the C200 axle which is now being canned in favor of a Dana 44 because I can't get anyone to give me a date when they can get me gears.

Those are some bling rims! And is that Fronty Canteen?

Brandon what are you doing braking-wise to make the D44 rear work with your other stock stuff? Or are you replacing everything? Nice price on the gear setup too!

I have a dilemma. My rear axle came from a automatic vehicle. The PO took out all the parking brake stuff out of the drums. I'm having a hard time tracking down the parking brake lever and strut for a 78 waggy.

Once I track down the parts I'll figure out how I'm going to run the cable.

As someone else said before I HIGHLY doubt those came out of a pre 80 waggy. The pre 80's waggy's had passenger side front diffs and an offcentered rear diff to the passenger side as well. I thought the pre 80's waggys were setup like Landcruisers where the front and rear output from their T-case was set off to the passenger side also like Land Rovers. (EDIT: the rear offset is due to the quadratrac option)

Copied from another website. It is from the internet so I can not verify its validity, although I have never seen a driver drop on a pre 80 waggy.

quote:
This document is in progress, these are my notes so far.

Mid 70's Ford F100 will have a 61" wide 44 but it will be 5X5.5
87 88 and 89 With the Factory Towing package XJ's had these.

'81 or newer full size Waggoneer.
Do NOT get the front from an '83 - '84 with vacume disconnect.
There are two widths to Waggy axles 60 inch wms to wms or 65 wms wms
there is not a 65" waggy 44 front. yes the wide track cherokees may have a front d44 in the 65" ball park but noth the waggys. the waggys had the 61" fronts and 59" rears and the narrow track cherokees were the same. the wide track cherokee had the wider axles

narrow-track Wagoneers had Dana44 axles that were 58.4" WMS to WMS

75-79 are passenger side pumpkin, disk brake, (my 76 had flattopped knuckles)

80-91 are driver side pumpkin disk braked.
2.72,3.08,3.54 are the most common gear ratios Ive seen.

some 80 and newer had a vacum disconnect you should steer clear of.

they are considered half ton,

the rears 79 and older are dana 44s, mostly offset ( Quadratrack) but some where centered.

80-85 ( or 86) where amc20 rears, but heavy duty, way better than the CJ amc20, some or all after 85 ( or 86) where centered dana 44 rears again

all rears 1980 and later were centered.

6 lugs = half ton 8 lugs = 3/4 ton ( in this era of Jeeps)

the narrow tracks are 62-63 front
59-60 rear

wide tracks are 65 front, 63 rear.

If it has fenderflares on it.. its a wide track.
If the fenders are molded into the sheetmetal.. its a narrow track.

vin
J means Jeep
6 the year of manuafactur ( 1976)
A ( A = auto, F = 3 speed stick, M= 4 speed stick)
16 means its a narrow cherokee, 17 would be widetrack chero
15 would be a wag,`18 would be a 4 door cherokee
N ( GVW n=6200,e=4150,p=6800)
N (n=3602v,z=401)

**They put in narrow tracks until 1979. In 1980 the went wide track.
Wide Track Wagoneer axles are driverside diff. They came out in 1980. The Narrow track Wagoneer axles are passengerside diff and were put in until 1979.
cherokees can be wide or narrow, and they were made that way from the mid 70s until the late 80s, before 1980 there were wide and narrow versions of the cherokee, they all had passenger sidfe diffs. 1980 and later were all drivers side diff, and narrow or widetrack

before 1979 there were ONLY narrow versions of the wagoneer, they had passenger side diffs
after 1980 there were ONLY narrow versions of the wagoneer, with drivers side diffs.

wagoneer thats a model 15, a model 16 is a cherokee narrow track.

cherokee wide tracks are 65 inches wide (WMS-WMS) just like a Jtruck.

Scout rear d44's are about 58" WMS-WMS, 3/16 tube

Jaime, I have the same issue, using my C200 axle with a ARB Locker but can't get gears for it. I have a H233b with 4.9's but need to get gears and ARB Locker for that if I go that route. What 44 are you going to use and how much $$$ is it going to cost you to fix it up to equal a 5.14 geared H233b with ARB Locker (although I would prefer to go 5.38).

The front is not from a 78 waggy. Thanks System-F . Previously I did some research on a 78 waggy to verify they did come with a front d44. I did not do and research on which side drop the pumpkin was.

Gim- a dana 44 has cheaper gear sets but all locker options cost the same as the H233b.

When I first did my SAS, I used a late 70s waggy axle that was pass-side drop. That was when I still had the 2wd trans under the truck, and was gonna go with a dual marlin crawler box... but changed my mind.

Gumybob, it's going to cost me a lot! Let me rephrase that, A LOT! But here is my logic, I know it's more of a justification than logic. Buying a gear set at $500, plus an ARB at $850, add in misc and set up and I'm at about $1800. The D44 parts are WAY cheaper, but I can't leave well enough alone. I could build it complete for about $2600 using a 60" scout or waggoneer rear housing. But I'm considering a disc brake set up and of course I have to get some beefed up axle shafts. Oh, and I'm having the C200 ends welded to the 44 to retain the abs!! So I might top 4g's in the end.
