I'm familiar with dies and cobalt drill bits and I have even seen a drill bit with a built-in tap. I have never heard of a cobalt drill tap or even cobalt taps. A quick search on Yahoo didn't turn anything up. Think a high quality HSS tap would work?

I pulled out the yoke the other day and noticed there's an indent in the middle of the shaft. Its about 3/8" deep. When you cut the end off with the wizz wheel, do you get past this point?
I tried to drill a pilot hole as is but it wasnt doing anything with a cobalt bit or titanium bit.

I'm taking the output shaft off of my spare X-fer case, and having a Lathe Operator at work turn it for me after work. This way I know it's straight, and we can use coolant, if needed (which is recommended), to help in the cutting.

Ok, finally got the thing done. What a chore it was to drill the hole. I finnaly got it when I cut the shaft past the indented hole that is case hardened all the way inside the shaft end. Then using a small carbide drill bit, the goodie started cutting into it. I made the pilot hole using lots of cutting fluid and slow speed at high pressures. Then stepped up to another bit, then another, then finnally the last size bit. I used the tap and tapped it out almost all the way to the bottom of the hole. My arms are killing me, it was tough. I suggest only people with plenty of brawn give this a go. I am glad it is over, now for a few pics.

I told you it wasnt that easy.
That shaft is pretty hard stuff.
It took me about 2 hours from start to finish to drill and tap it.

cobalt drill bits are the greatest. Bought a set from the fair a few years ago- the demo guy was drilling thru metal files and disc brake rotors like it was nothing.

Rodman is one vendor name, I think,
They will shatter sometimes if used at low speed. I did and just sent it to them... got a replacement free of charge( lifetime gaurantee)
