I'm looking to get some new trail tools. I'm actually looking for a set that is easy to carry/store on the truck and is organized. I almost bought a big set from Sears but then realized that I don't think I need 3 different ratchet drives and sockets for each. Or do I? So has anybody bought a kit that is organized? If so what did it have in it? I also carry some odd ball tools that I think may be specific to my truck, but I am just trying to get a feel for what is out there.

I think you'll have to assemble what you want/need, as there won't be one kit that will cover everything.

I think some essentials should be:

- a tire plug kit
- ratchet straps
- spraycan of ether( nice for seating beads- but can be dangerous) Alternative is to jack up the wheel, ratchet strap around the center of thetire- this holds tire bead to the rim better to get a better chance of sealing when trying to air it up.

-disposable gloves, rags
-air source

for starters....

I consider those things extras some of which I already carry. Let me clear up what I am trying to say. I currently carry almost every tool wrench ratchet and screw driver I have with me as well as other specailty tools. The problem is I either have to carry them in a box that just mixes everything or several small bozes which have to be stacked and seems to take up a lot of room. So I am going to leave all my current stuff at home and get a new starter kit for the trails. I'd liike to get smething with a case so it can all stay organized.

I have one of those tool sets from sears that you are talking about.. i carry it on the trail.. it sucks..

let me explain. I spend more time organizing the tools in that frigg'n plastic "organized" container than i've spent test fitting the atlas in my truck 3x. as soon as i hit the trail all the tools fly all over the "organizer" and doesn't keep them in their place.

I'm going to ditch the plastic organizer box and go back to my old way of organizing the tools in my army surplus ammo box but with the tools from the sears kit. (i got away from it cause i got the sears kit as a gift before i got the full set of tools to put in the ammo box)

is what i started doing is getting those rails that hold the sockets like these:

and trimming them to the length of the ammo box, the riveting them to the under side of the ammo box lid. i'll have like 3 rails in there when i get all the sockets in.

for the wrenches i'm going to use something like this from mastercraft:

the tools that are left over will go in a small box (like a fishing tackle box) that fits inside the ammo box. I can still fit a massive tow strap, chiltons guides, zip ties, and other random stuff in there i'm hoping to get the mastercraft roll up in there as well with the wrenches.

The ammo box works well since it's sturdy, water tight, and has strong handles on it that can be used to help tie it down in place.

I'll have to post pics of it.

Ditto on the "wrench rollup"- got two of them at Sears last week.

Crqaftsman also has magnetic socket organizers that can come in handy.

I've seen screwdriver "sets" in rollups, as well.

I carry almost all the stuff I need to disassemble the truck in a box in ditty bags and zip locks and loose. What I need is a new garage tool set so I don't have to dig into the truck tools to fix a faucet.

Has anyone tried to make a tool box to fit below the jump seats? It looks like a good place to have tools that you always want with you. While having another bigger box you put in just for the trail.

Put yourself a tool box together.

Grab yourself a standard and a metric wrench. Same goes with the sockets. Grab your self some assorted common hand tools. If you have a odd ball size nuts like for your heims, keep a wrench on hand for them.

I keep a full set of common wrenches and socket with me.

SAE-4,5/16,11/32,3/8,7/16,1/2,9/16,5/8,11/16,3/4,13/16,7/8,15/16.

Metric from 8-19MM. Anything above 19mm is uncommon.

As for pliers, I just have a Stanley set.

For those who do tow their rig there's no excuse for not having tools.

Re read the whole thread. I can throw a bunch of crap in a bag, but that only means I will be looking for that 10mm point socket at the bottom of the bag everytime because everything was just thrown in it. I'm looking fr an organized way to carry my stuff so I'm not holding up a bunch of rigs while I look for a certain wrench or tool.

As for a tow rig.... if I get one I may as well go out and buy a side by side or ATV. A tow rig has nothing to do with this thread. If I keep the tools on the tow rig they won't be on the trail rig when it breaks.

Lator....

No I saw that and think it, as well as the roll ups, are great ideas. I had already stated that I carry the oddball stuff specific to my truck, I was just looking for a nice set for genral purposes. Looks like I will be piecing something together since there is nothing on the market that fits my needs in an organized set.

I re-edited my last post. I was trying to speak in a general context.

Ok, it's really not that much tools

two rails, one standard and the other metric, a ratchet and pliers. on text it looks like a lot of tools but it's not.
