I'm just wondering how strong my c200 rear axle is. It's in my 04 frontier and now that sas is done i'm debating what to do out back. I already purchased and installed an arb a year ago befor i had decided to do the 4x4 conversion and sas it so i already have a grand tied up in this axle. I need to regear it and it's going to cost 550 with all new bearings used set of 4.9 gears and installation or it will cost 850 with new gears but i could go to a 5.13 which would be nice offroad but 95 percent of my driving is on road. So basically is it worth keeping the c200 and regearing or should i look for another axle that is 6 lug and build that? Thanks ahead of time for input.

It all depends on one thing, YOU, if your the type to put the skinny pedal down and say '**** IT!' then no. If your a finesse kinda guy you could get away with it just fine.

I'm usually a finesse driver as this is my dd but it will get wheeled several times a year. Also i should mention i plan on running 36 or 37 inch tires.

Simply no, a C200 will not hold up to a 36 or 37" tire. A 35 would be the max I would go with a c200.

Mat, did you ever take a look at my build. Maybe you should stop by one day. I had around 1K invested in my H233b before I swapped it out for a Dana 44. detroit locker, lower gears, rebuilt the axle.

My rear Dana 44 is locked with 5.38 gears. Next upgrade will be custom shafts( not 4330, there too stiff/brittle for rear applications).

What are your end plans for the truck? Daily driver with annually off-road trips? If this is the case you could build your C200 with 35" tires and be just fine. You would have to watch the rear tires and the gas peddle.

Is the d44 a c-clip axle? If not than i would consider that over my c200 due to parts availability.

Where are you finding 4.90 gears for a C200?

Are you trying a set of R200A front gears from an Xterra?

That was the plan i have a front diff i was going to rip apart and make sure everything would fit. I s there a reason they won't work? I looked on arbs site and the ring rears seem to be the same bolt pattern.

I had the same problem and same set up. I had traded my front R200 with Clamini LSD for someone's H233b. I then sold my C200 Rear, use the cash for a new ARB for the H233b and installed the 5.14 gears. Even with 5.14's, I struggle to push 35" tires, works great with 33".

Do you need a set of 5.38 D44 gears? I happen to have a set....

I may take you up on that but it depends on which axle i end up with. I just found a 6 lug 14 bolt on craigslist and i'm considering that since i'm full width up front already. I will let you know in the next week or so.

Just so you know, the 6 lug 14 bolt is a semi-float axle (with c-clips).

Thanks for the info. so only the 8 lugs are full float? What about 60's i'm pretty sure they made a 6 lug in the old fords and it's still full float correct?
