I'm thinking of a SAS on my truck but i'm not sure on some of the parts i need.

I want to go with a Dana 44 axle and for what i've read there are a few years of Bronco/Wagoneer that have the right axle. Meaning that they have the right trackwide, manual hubs, six lugs hubs and close to 4.875:1 gearing allready from factory. I can't find out which years of the Bronco or Wagoneer production those axles were fit. Hopefully you can help me.

If i can find this axle i might be able to SAS my truck affortable. I'm going with stock Wagoneer leafs and build things as simple as possible. I just need my truck strong.

strongly suggest you try pathfinderoffroad.com, look at 4 SAS writeups done by Paulzo. very informative site, and should give you some ideas on where to start.
seems to me that if you have the wagoneer, do some measuring and maybe you can take the front axle, steering, leafs, everything and put them on your nissan.
if it was mine, i'd ensure it had hubs, pumpkin on correct side, CV front driveshaft, same lug pattern as rear, but i'd also go with the ring/pinion in the 5.13-5.89 range if running 35' or bigger tires. i don't think you'd regret it.

The Waggy and Bronco axles won't come stock with that gearing you mention, but aftermarket gears are available for much less money than you can get Nissan gears for.

Basically, you'd want the driver side diff late 70s-early 90's Jeep Wagonneer. The Broncos came with D44's from about 72-77. I believe both have 5 lug hubs. If using your Nissan rear, you can convert the outer ends on the axle to Chevrolet 1/2 ton for the 6 on 5.5 bolt pattern that will match your nissan axle. You can also get disc brakes this way if the axle isn't already so equipped.

So i have to find a late'70 early'90 Wagoneer axle with drivers side diff and at least discbrakes and manual hubs. It's difficult to find these Dana44 axles in Europe but it's worth to give it shot. I wonder what gears and chevy outer ends would cost. The outer ends must be sitting on a wreckyard somewhere. I'm going to try to find an axle and take it from there and if all else fails i can upgrade the stock steering.

In the meanwhile i'm going to check out pathfinderoffroad.com.

Thanks Rondo and DR

The patrol axle would work well.. But you'll need to double up your transfer case.. (find a divorced case that outputs on the left hand side (looking at front of truck) and put it behind the stock transfer case.

He might as well go all out and get the rear axle with the electric locker too. Those patrol axles are definately wider than ours.

That would be a pretty sweet setup, imo.

I'm starting to think that i'm better off buying a Patrol but i like the bed of my truck too much. I could go for a Patrol c200 (i think) frontaxle of a old R version. Those had leafsprings and are the same wide as the H233b under my truck. The pumpkin is at the wrong side though so that has to be fixed.

hmmm, maybe the tranfercase of a Patrol would bolt up to the engine in my truck?

Check with BART to see if the Patrol case on his is divorced. If it is, you're golden. Just need new drivelines and a coupler mate the tranny and Tcase.

There is a Nissan 4x4 specialistshop nearby that have all kind of parts, Patrol parts in particular. With any luck i can visite them this Saturday to check things out. They run Paris/Dakar this year with a Crewcab Navara that has coils on all 4 corners. I like to see the steering solution too. If they have a decent steering solution i'm going the easy way for now. It would give me the opportunity to collect SAS parts over time.

I'm going with Patrol GR axles front and rear. That will give me the same gear ratio and trackwide front and rear. It's more difficult to install because they are coilsprung but they will give a softer ride. The rear axle of a GR has a locker so that is solved too big grin

Only one issue remains, the diff is on the passengerside and i can't use the transfercase of the Patrol. For what i know now the Patrol never had a seperate transfercase either so that's going to be the main problem to solve.

Which seperate transfercase would come to mind?

Ahhh thanks, that NP205 or the Dana20 were used on those old Dodge W200 army pick-up trucks right? I think i can find one of those relatively easy. I can picture the whole swap now, it's going to be fun.

I still might go the Dana44 way though. Maybe, just maybe i found a Wagoneer axle. I just send the guy a e-mail asking if he still got the axle and if it's one with discbrakes and manual hubs. He asking $100 so if he still has it, IT'S MINE!!
