Cool!

One note on the NP205 - that's the one case with an even more dismal low range than a Nissan case - 1.96:1. And they came in one ton trucks, so they're big and heavy.

...but in a dual case set-up it would be OK smile.

Just mate it to his existing case and get much better gearing...

Oh my, i'm drooling. Plans are being drawn and i'm on the lookout for a good set of used Patrol axles and a seperate transfercase. For the transfercase, I don't like the big and heavy idea too much. Is the Dana 20 smaller? Which trucks have those?

One nice thing about big and heavy is that it wont break. smile Just whatever you do, dont go with anything smaller than the stock T-case. In granny low (both cases in low range), there'll be a lot of stress on the final transfer case driving the axles.

In my searh for Patrol axles i ran into a front axle of a 97' Grand Cherokee v8 model. That one also has the diff on the drivers side but no manual hubs. I haven't seen the axle and the person that want to sell the axle doesn't know much about itso here goes. Is it a Dana44?? are there manual hubs available for this axle, same for gearing and outer 6lugs hubs?

Also, does a 97' Grand cherokee have a seperate transfercase which i could use with the Patrol axle idea?

They don't make Dana 35 front axles! That would be a Dana 30HD axle. The CJ, YJ, and TJ (except the new Rubicon) all have Dana 30 axles (in a lighter duty variety). The new Wrangler (TJ) Rubicon has Dana 44's F/R! Can't wait to see those in juck yards! I want that X-fer case! Divorced adapter anyone? big grin big grin cool

A Dana 30 is not a beefy axle so it's one to avoid as far as i know. Patrol axles are pretty expensive and i haven't even found a rear with a locker yet, only limited slips. Those came in the cheapest model. Let's keep the searh going.

win, can you find a D30 from a TJ? What size tire do you plan on running? I have a friend running 37's on a TJ with a stick shift, and 4:1 with a D30, and he hardly ever breaks it. If you only plan on running 35's, just go with a D30. You can get beefier shafts...

I'm actually thinking of running 33" tires big grin , that's mainly because i have a manual transmission and 4.875:1 gears. I have to regear the front Dana30 axle to match that.

This might not be a bad option for my application. The diff is on the side i need and if it can handle 35" tires it's strong enough for me.

Just a few questions remain, does a "Grand Cherokee 5.something V8 in my case" has the approx the same trackwide as the H233b?

The axle comes with autohubs, are they the same kind as the nissan ones (mechanical)? If so, i still could use them.

Can they be regeared to 4.875:1 relatively cheap?

Thanks

i had a jeep grand cherokee and it had the dana 30 front axle.
my 95 wrangler also has the dana 30 and on 33s with a locker and the warn hub conversion, it has never broken.
with that said, i'd stay away from the dana 30 and go with the dana 44. by the time you throw heavy axle shafts in it, the warn hub conversion (mandatory if you want a locker) and all that, you'll be in it for more $ than its worth. the dana 44 can be built for cheap, find one that comes with manual hubs or get some new ones less than 70$, and 4.88 ring and pinion for less than $150. installation may cost a bit no matter where you go.
the bottom line is when you upgrade from 33s to 35s, you'll be glad you got the dana 44.
Mcsue i know what you're saying, but your friend breaks his, and even if its not very often, once is too much. i've been with guys on the trail who broke, and not only do they feel bad, they also hold everyone else up.

Ok, i've got everything on a row now. I want to go with a Wagoneer Dana44, put a 4.88:1 in it, chevy 6 lugs outer hubs and if needed Warn manual hubs. Springs are going to be the stock 7 leafpacks from the Wagoneer also. I thinks it's easiest way to SAS the truck.

The Patrol axle idea stays in the back of my head but that is an shipload of work and cost an awefull lot.

I'm trying to find out if some Patrol's came with either a c200 or h233b frontend with 4.875:1 gearing in them. I don't know about the c200 but maybe the h233b could be flipped, cutting the knuckles and rotade the 3th member. Modify the diff housing a bit so the gears wouldn't hit it. Could be possible maybe.

I don't think an H233B can be flipped because of the stud locations. (I don't have one anymore, so I couldn't tell you big grin )

On the D30, they CAN be geared to 4.88, and stock, are more than strong enough for 37's. The only time my friend broke, was right AFTER the 37's and 4:1 went in, and right BEFORE the superior axles went in. I don't believe he's broken the Superior shafts yet.
