BTW Did'nt mean to upset any Terrano owners out there with the comment in my last post. Terrano is a much more effective mud-plugger than X-Trail. It just seems that Nissan's marketing for the truck is just about non-existent in the UK.

Alistair,
the Terrano is on the D21 platform whereas the Xterra uses the D22 hence the leaf springs and different A-Arms. And the Patrol will see a SB Chevy when the 2.8 L28 dies some day, but in the moment it's still alive and kickin' with 300k km's and no need to change for now. The V8 will preferably be a Diesel though.
Ron,
the Terrano is marketed as lifestyle here in Germany. Pretty aggressive marketing with an off-road challenge and such things.

Fair enough. I guess Land Rover dominate the UK market so much that Nissan don't bother spending any marketing budget here.

Ok just some differences between the Xterra, X-Trail, and Terrano/Mistral.

Xterra is based on the D22 platform, has the KA24 and VG33. Traction is RWD with a part time transfer case. It only has 4 doors.

X-Trail is based on the Almera Tino platform, has a 2.0 or 2.5 4 cylinder gas or 2.2 diesel. The diesel and the SR20Vet engine (for Japan only) get a 6 speed manual. It is FWD with a push button low range and only has 4 doors.

Terrano/Mistral is based on the D21 platform. It is RWD with a part time transfer case. It has 3 engine choices, the KA24, the old 2.7 diesel, and a new 3.0 DiD diesel from the Patrol. All engines have either manual or automatic choices. It is sold in either 3 or 5 doors.

In my opinion Nissan could make a great lineup in the States by including all 3 of these trucks. Just picture it.

The X-Trail would go head to head with the Toyota Rav4, Honda Cr-V, Saturn Vue, etc as all are FWD crossover vehicles. The Nissan has the advantage in horsepower, having a low range, and having a hose out interior. It would not canibalize the Murano as the Murano is as big as a Pathfinder, while the Xtrail is smaller than an Xterra.

The Terrano/Mistral could be sold as an Infiniti. It is smaller than the QX4, does not look like the Xterra, the Supercharged VG33 can be shoehorned in it (giving it greater hp), and it has a luxurious interior with wood, leather, tilt/telescoping steering wheel etc.
