I have a potential fix to your speedo gear problem. You mentioned you used GL-3,4,5 75-w90 ...so which standard is it? 3, 4, or 5? they are not backward compatible. I read that the transmissions in our trucks call for GL-4 and NOT GL-5, because GL-5 contains some additive or different chemical that is corrosive to yellow metals ...or something like that. i don't know if that meant synchros, or speedo gears, or what ...but if youre running anything but gl-4, that would be the first thing i'd fix, because you may be causing yourself other problems. it may not be THE cause, but when in search of the cause, it is good to fix other problems at the same time, as one may cause spillover problems in another area (corrosion, etc). Just an exerpt from one of several sites i found citing the problem:

When an API GL-5 fluid is used in an API GL-4 application, the additional EP additive may have a negative reaction with the yellow metal components (brass, bronze, etc.) used in some transmissions. The EP additive can contribute to chemical corrosion, etching or excess wear of yellow metals over time, which may shorten the life of the transmission components. Always be sure that the correct fluid with the proper API service designation is chosen for the application.

as far as the rear axle swap, when you figure out an answer to that, let me know. i'd like an h233b, and if the rear track width is that much greater than that of the front, i'd just run wheel spacers in the front if it looked silly. just a thought.
