My 87 has developed a faint rattle, doesn't sound like bearings but kinda sounds like its coming from the oil pump. Was also thinking (or maybe hoping) the alternator.
Any ideas would help. It kinda sounds like something loose or broken bouncing around.
Dont know if its related but its been idling higher than usual as well.

Might be the timing chain slapping around.

Did an oil change on someones else Titan last weekend.

There is a cover under the engine area, thin metal.

There was a screwdriver rolling around in there...

She said she had been trying to find a noise for sometime.....that was it.

Meh.

Was wondering about the chain. Is there anything in the oil pump that could make noise like that?

Theres no cover or anything external rattling around, definatly sounds internal. Confused

don't think so. You probably don't have an oil pressure guage, eh?

No just an idiot light. Not even sure if it works. I was working it pretty hard the last few times i have been out wheeling. Have also developed a bit of a leak somewhere possibly the rear main or oil pan. Front of the passenger motormount is getting wet now. Also dripping from the bellhousing. Not sure if its related but the noise and leak started the same day.

Remove your oil cap and you should be able to see the timing chain. Try to move it around with a screwdriver. If it is easily moved, it is no longer under tension and is probably the source of the internal rattling that you hear.

How much will it affect the idle speed if its worn?

Hard to say. It effects the valve timing a bit. I had one go bad once, but don't recall it changing the idle at all.

If you can't tell if the chain has gone slack by checking through the oil fill, don't hesitate to pull the valve cover and check. You might just find your oil leak as well. The VC gaskets tend to shrink and harden over time and leak down the back of the engine.
If you have a leak on the RH side of the engine it is probably a leaky oil pressure sensor.

I have been hoping that most of the leak was the valve cover gasket and not the rear seal. I never even thought about the oil pressure sensor leaking. I did check the filter, it was dry.

I spoke to my local nissan dealer today. They said its rare that the chain would go, that i most likely just need a tensioner.
Does this sound right?
What about guides do they not wear on these motors?

You can get a kit from your favorite parts store for $100 and replace it all. Spend another $15 on a Haynes manual if you don't already have one. You will need it for chain set-up and torque specs.
Have you removed the oil cap and checked for looseness? Is it the chain making the noise?

Cheapest kit here is $260. We really get screwed up here north of the border. Mad
It does seem to have some play in it.

Check out the sponsor advertisers on the home page for parts- mention the N4W discount. They should get back w/ a quote in a day or so.

They've always saved me at least 15-20 % over local dealer prices( including shipping).
