Now for something completely different. I have a 98 4x2 4 cyl Frontier. I want to make it into a hybrid electric truck by putting a 4x4 front axle on it and drive the front axle directly with an 8 inch diameter DC electric motor. This way I can drive the front axle with the engine off up to maybe 35 or 40 mph then switch over to the engine for higher speeds and longer distances. Now for the questions:
-What year Nissan front diffs will fit my truck? I'm going to try to get it from a junk yard so will Hardbody or Pathfinder axles fit?
-How tough is it to swap axles? Is it a drop-in kind of thing?
-I need to increase (decrease?) the gear ratio to make the electric motor turn at the same RPM as it would if driving the transmission in second gear. Is it possible to change the ratio in a front diff? Otherwise I won't be able to get the truck to go much faster than 15 or 20 mph. Does anybody know of any sort of small reduction gearboxes that I could mount on the DC motor to then drive the front axle? A compact planetary gearbox with just one reduction ratio would be perfect.
-If anyone has any other ideas on how I might do this please be sure to post. Thanks.

John

Where's the electric motor going to go?

plenty of room anywhere along the frame to mount an electric motor.

Ya, but it's got to be big enough to handle the load plus be situated so that power can xfer to the front drivetrain..

DOn't mean to make light of your project , but it sounds like a boondoogle/moneypit.

Wink Maybe you could buy a Prius and drop your Fronty body on top of the chassis.

I'm not positive where I'll put it yet but it will hopefully be in the engine compartment, depending on where the input to the front axle is. I'll drive it with a short shaft u-jointed to the motor. An 8 inch diameter DC motor has plenty of power to drive a truck. It will be something of a moneypit but then so are jacked up 4x4s that built just for pleasure. Not to denegrate them but this project will at least get me much improved gas mileage. Any ideas about what axles will fit?

Since Ford came out with the hybrid Escape I'll bet the hybrid Xterra is next. Big Grin

Ford liscensed the hybrid tech from Toyota because they couldn't come up with there own...

Probably be a Hybrid RAV4 before the Xterra.
