My dad’s 89 Nissan 4x4 makes a roaring-squealing noise when it’s going down the road. It happens when you have your foot on the gas. I was wondering if it was a bearing in the transfer case or it was the rear end. I can’t remember which it is. All I know is that it is extremely loud; you almost need earplugs on the highway. I was hoping one of you guys knew what it was. It is a Z24 truck too, if that helps. I figured some of the drive train is different than the 6cyl.

Something definitely isnt right. If it occurs at low speeds as well, mabye have someone walk or run alongside the truck to listen to see where its coming from. Should be easy to tell if its from the diff or the tranny. Squealing noises are generally bad (unless its a belt or idler pulley bearings.. they do this too). Generally means a bearing has gone out or something.

One other thing to check is the output of the transfer case to the rear driveshaft. If it has a oil shield on it, it could be bent and rubbing on the driveshaft. I've seen that before. Makes a scraping squealing noise.

If your truck is howling in 5th gear going down the highway your counter shaft bearing's on the transmission are probably failing.

Was the transmission fluid ever changed on the truck?

I would drain the transmission fluid and look at the drain plug if it has more than just some fine metal particles you could have an expensive repair on hand.

YOu could always put the rear up on jackstands, block the front wheels, put in gear and run it up to sppeed to find the noise. Make sure that the truck is stable before attempting this tho!
