Every morning when I crank up, the tranny bumps pretty hard from 1st to 2nd. It used to just do it one, then be fine for the rest of the day. Now it bumps a little after the 2nd or 3rd time(not gears).

I saw some stuff in the store last week..."stop hard shifting"...would that stuff be any good?

I hope my tranny hasn't already started to die, but it wouldn't surprise me...

Does it quit shifting hard after the motor is fully warmed up? Tranny fluid expands (and neccessarily thins) as it heats up, and starts flowing better. Takes a little more pressure to shift with cold fluid, hence a higher and harder shift point. Mine will shift a little hard first thing in the morning - getting cold around here. Might double check the fluid level too.

You may need to check your fluid it could be fried. I am thinking this may be a possibility for you especially since you said you always go 4 wheeling in 4Hi. If you are crawiling in 4 H that is a good way to cook tranny fluid smile

While I'm doing my head gasket thing I'll change the tranny fluid...anybody know how much a new gasket costs? Anything else I need to do the job?

"cold tranny syndrome" is much less pronounced if running a synthetic ATF:)

Ahh becareful with those tranny additive they are like adding molasses to your tranny. I think most of them it would be like adding 80W oil to your transmission which can silence things but in the long run it won't fix the problem and most likely make your tranny fail eariler.
First take your vehicle in and have the tranny completely flushed. Yes it is expensive but it is worth it.
A tranny rebuild will cost you $1750 at least. Also second bypass that crappy factory cooler and put in two heavy duty transmission coolers.
If none of this helps take your vehicle to a respected tranny place and have them do a test drive and see what they say.

If I did it all myself(dual coolers), how much would it cost and how long would it take? Gotta make a grocery list for my trip to the parts store tomorrow...

$1750 for Nissan tranny rebuild, or:

$300 for 4.3
$200 for 700r4
$200 for wiring harness and computer stuff
$100 for NP205
$100 for misc. crap

Hmm... I decided on 4.3 swap. big grin hehe

Tranny is as good as new big grin

It's been roughly 25k miles since the tranny went in, and under normal driving this woulda been about the time to change it anyways. From now on, it's 15k because I don't drive like a normal person hahaha

Mikey, its a lot cheaper than that. A rebuilt unit at Phoenix transmissions isnt too expensive. They run around $800-900.

But, on the other hand, the 700r4 is bulletproof and is exactly what you need for turning those tires.

I was just quoting SHAD. I've already got a 700r4. I'm getting the 4.3 next Friday. I'm tired of Nissan crap electrical stuff. I'm gonna run everything to one big ass fuse and carry like 50 extra fuses. It'll make everything REAL easy.
