I Have a 01 X and went muddin this weekend I tried climbing a wee hill only about a 65degree incline made about 5 runs at it when i noticed that my truck didn't launch at the hill like it was with the first couple of runs, i rolled back put her in 2wd and gave her some gas she was really sluggish, let her cool off for a bit and she was fine for the reast of the day no hills just mud trails, today i get my Overdrive light fashing like 5or 6 times after i start the truck and body know if this is a code?? or had this prob before all my jeep freinds tell me that the X cannot handle hills i hope there not right....

It sounds as if your transmission (automatic, right?) went into limp-home mode. Since the overdrive light is flashing, the transmission ECU has stored an error code. I don't know how to decipher the codes for your model. Maybe someone else can help here.
Since the transmission seemed to operate properly after a cooling-off period, I would suspect that the fluid temp was too high and the ECU sensed this. You might want to look into installing an aftermarket transmission fluid cooler. I know that the older Pathfinder & Hardbody automatics were equipped with coolers that are prone to clogging.

Sounds like you just overheated the transmission a little. I've done this once on my pathy when wheeling on a very hot day with no extra tranny cooler. Mine went into limp mode (2nd gear) and just slipped the torque converter when driving around. It was extremely sluggish. I just let it cool down a while and it was fine after that, but I installed a tranny cooler immediately after that happened.

Heat KILLS our auto trannys!!!

I would HIGHLY recommend installing an aftermarket transmission cooler in your truck though. Your transmission will thank you.

John, are those coolers pretty much universal? Are they a monster to install? Am thinking one for my X wouldn't be a bad idea.

Here's what mine does...If you spin your rear end in mud(or whatever) while in Drive it will throw you in 2nd gear. It won't let you back in Drive until you cut off the truck and then turn it back on. It's all good after that.

I did this one time and drove a good 20 miles in 2nd gear...oil was changed the next day big grin

Luckily it was a very cold day(40 hehe) so the tranny didn't overheat.

The A/T coolers are a breeze to install, I'm sure you could do it DR.

I'll bet he was trying the climbs in 4hi instead of 4lo and overheated his tranny too. Thing is, there have been many Xterras that have non-functioning A/T temp lights. If it did overheat, he may not have been aware of it.

Check the color and smell of the ATF. If it's not red or pink or it smells cooked, I'd get it flushed.

Yeah, that A/T cooler was easy. Took about 2 hours, only because I decided to mount it between the A/C condensor and the radiator so I had to pull the rad out.

Any recommendations on what to get? This whole Auto tranny stuff is new to me. I've always owned manuals. John, maybe one of these days you can show me yours so I can see how it's plumbed.

Not sure on the warranty, but as a driving tip, whenever the going gets slow and steep, always use 4lo. That's what it's there for smile
