The 5 speed in my hardody is giving me troubles, leaking input, grinding second gear. I rebuilt this trans once before. I need to fix this thing. What are y best options? How much luck have people had with throwing in a tranny from the junkyard? Im afraid to buy a used trans that is no better off than what i got. I could always buy a new trans from the dealer but thats not too economical. Has anyone successfully completed a T-5 swap?

I can't answer your questions, if but only to say that if you rebuild your trans- OVERFILL IT!

FRom 87 -95, NISSAN put the fill hole too low on the side of the trans housing. Bearings starved for oil. If you fill through the shifter, you can easily get another quart/quart and a half of GL-4 lube(never useGL-5) to keep the bearings happy.

4x4fro,,, The gl-4 for boat stern drives "lower unit lube" or their synchro mesh GL-4?

How long did the trans live after rebuild?

Was the lube the same age, or did you change it out a few times? Did you replace everything that needed to be replaced or did you cut some corners?

REason I ask is I used Amsoil lube in my trans well past 150K miles w/ no issues. I usually let it go only 30 K miles before draining and filling w/ new.

Heard lots of stories aobut MT-90 Redline Gl-4 being slicker than snot, so I tried that just recently. It actually shifts better when cold, compared to the Amsoil. Over quarter million miles and shifts just fine.

I would say get another tranny or rebuild what you've got ,and throw MT-90 lube in it.

My opinion? Search around to see what is available, but you are right; you are taking a chance. If you can find a used one cheap, throw a rebuild on it and pop it in. Otherwise rebuild yours.

The only way to know what you have is to rebuild one. Replace worn gear sets and/or ball bearings if need be.

Ditto on the Redline MT-90.

It's a fine line between clever and stupid.

I'm not fond of rebuilt transmissions. I would pony up the money for a new or low miles used tranny.

I priced a new tranny for my HB for 1500. This is the route I will be going when I replace mine.

I ordered a new trans from the dealer and some mt-90 from summit. The truck is worth it. I put a new engine in the truck about 40,000 miles ago, so i plan to keep it awhile.

Oh and the trans i rebuilt was done properly. My father helped me. He was a Nissan tech for many years. The trans had napa brand GL-4 for a wile before i switched to the amsoil trans oil.
