Hi, I have a 1991 nissan 4x4 pickup 2.4 engine, with a 5 speed. I let my 17 yr old son drive it for a while, now it won't go into 1st gear. If it does, you have to force it. No grinding, just very hard. I also put in a new clutch and adjusting up, still doesn't help 1st gear. All other gears are fine. Does anyone know how to fix this? And how hard it is to take apart to fix? I'm not afraid to try, just have no experience with them.

My truck is now infamous for trashing pilot bushings.... this seems to be the root of my problems. Replace the bushing, and it will go into gear.

If you turn off the truck, I'd be willing to bet it goes into gear.

Yes, when not running, it will go into first gear. I'm still buying another trans from a guy who emailed me a little while ago. His has less miles than mine, and I know his is good. I am going to replace the pilot bushing when putting in the new trans I am buying. Why does it only affect 1st gear if it is the pilot bearing??? Oh, and I love the front bumper and skid plate you made. Did you weld them yourself? Oh, and I have experienced your slogan at the bottom of your post in my younger years!

I dunno why it only affects the 1st gear. Maybe something to do with the fact that you are stopped, and it slides out??? All I know, is that it gets all marred and nasty looking. I talked to my tranny guy, and he can't figure out why I am trashing bushings. My input shaft looks fine, as well as the rest of the components.

Thanks for the compliments on the bumper. I had a friend build it for me. I don't see him much on the board anymore, but it kicks ass. I added the diamond plate after to finish it up.

I hope you're not talking about downshifting into 1st... Just sitting still and shifting into first w/ the clutch all the way in?

Hi, yes I mean just sitting, trying to put into first. It's like a brick wall, no grinding. If you do get it to go in, you have to force it. But if you shut off the truck, it goes right in?

Try bleeding the clutch line and see if that helps.
