I just ordered my locker today. Wanted to ask you a few questions about the master shim and diff backlash. What are some good techniques to reset these to a working spec?

Cheers,
JD

If you have never set the backlash before I would recommend having a shop do it. I was able to do mine with a little help from a friend that has been doing it for a living for the past 15 years. big grin

That's kind of what I was expecting to hear. I might have a shop lined up to do the work. I just wanted to see what was involved. I'd much rather do the work myself than have a shop do it. Not for the $$ aspect of it but for the knowledge.

Then again, anyone who's seen my truck knows that doing it right the first time means trying again a few more times before it's even mediocre. DOH.

Cheers,
JD

Backlash you want at about 5/1000th's minimum, and 10/1000th's maximum. 8 is a good number. With shims, you just have to try it out. Get a good pattern right in the center on the driveside. My Yukon's in the front took I think 106/1000th's shims. (I think.. Look at the Gear Install thread in Skidplate Alley)

JD, sorry for the delayed response...haven't been online since Friday. Mikey's right on backlash specs, and it's all about trial and error until you get it right. I wouldn't attempt it without at least assistance from someone who's done it before.

My 3rd member is going in tomorrow!

Andy, did you get your third back yet? I'll be out of school at about 5 tomorrow. Want me to come over afterward and we'll bolt everything in? It should go quick. I've removed and replaced my rear axle enought that it goes pretty fast.. hehe Do I need to pick up my dad's jack stands? He has ones that are big enough for the Pathfinder.

Okay, I interpreted "3rd goes in tomorrow" as it going in the truck tomorrow...

Thanks for the info fella's. I think I've found a shop that Wilburburns (Cliff) is hooking me up with. I'm just going to take him the 3rd member as well. This is a part time business for him, I just hope he can get it done pretty quick. hehe I'll start having DT's from not having my truck to drive.

Good luck with yours this week Andy.

Mikey, I can't keep up with the number of "projects" you have going on at your place. haha What are you working on now, besides the Pissfinder?

Cheers,
JD

The only other project besides the Pathy is the 300Z. I'm just getting it decent enough to sell. I'm hoping that my dad will give me like half the money from it, and that will make the engine/tranny/etc swap easier. I've got a new idea for rocker panels. I don't have school Wednesday, so by the end of the week, I'll have new rockers... big grin hehe

Well, I contemplated tackling this one but was talked out of it by more reasonable folks. roll eyes haha. (I'm still kinda thinking about it....).

Tonight, I'm working in Visio on how I want to lay out all of the air lines, fittings, switches and other odds-n-ends. Basically creating a shopping list to augment what I already have on hand and a plan of attack per se on where to put everything.

Cheers,
JD
