I've had my head buried in my engine for the past couple days and I think I've found the problem. The PCV is clogged good, causing the gasket to give and so oil is squirting out from the bottom side of the screws that hold on the rocker covers.

I think both sides must be bad. The thing is, there's still oil leaking form somewhere, and I really don't know where it's coming from. I hope once I get the covers off I can see better.

Is there a PCV on the driver's side cover? If not, how is pressure released on that side? Does it connect to the other side and then thru the PCV?

brb...

I even cleaned up the oil and it's stil nasty next to the bolts...and you can see clearly where the oil has been squirting from somewhere onto the exhaust manifold...

I got all the screws on the pass side(the one in the pic) pretty tight and it's not leaking over there as far as I can tell. I set a piece of white paper on top of the manifold and let the engine run, reved it up a few times and it was still perfectly clean...

This leads me to believe that the other side is the only thing leaking. I'll check under the truck tomorrow morning and see if there's any oil on the floor(newspaper).

Heck, at least my tranny feels good big grin

One more thing...anybody ever take the intake manifold off? The Haynes doesn't cover it worth crap, so I'm gonna be doing it blind. I guess it will need a new gasket with some RVT on it?

Those parts guys are gonna be so confused big grin

if you remove the lower intake manifold, you will have to get new gaskets to go between it and the head.. you cant reuse the old ones. These are pretty tricky gaskets to replace, since they pass both coolant and air. I've always used either some RTV or some copper spray gasket to seal them up real well before I bolt the manifold back on.

Why are you removing it?

I don't think i can get the driver's side cover off due to all the intake crap sitting on top of it. Maybe I can...I dunno.

Oh, gotcha.. The upper intake manifold is pretty easy. There are 5 bolts that hold it to the lower manifold. Sometimes you can reuse the gasket between them. Lots of hoses to deal with, but just watch where they come off of and you'll be alright. I believe there may be some coolant lines in thre too so you may want to drain the coolant. But, just start taking it apart and see how it goes.

coolant will be drained cause I'm changing it anyways...if I knew for sure that the head(s) was leaking I'd run K&W through there too, but I'm just gonna see what happens...

Thanks bro big grin

Alright...coolant is out and it's just dirty. No sign of oil in it.

It's gonna get pretty cold tonight and I don't know if the parts place is open. I'm about to go drive over there but if it's not, I guess I'll have to fill the rad back up cause I don't want anything to freeze frown

Maybe they will be open and I can get the work done today...

Old truck=hard to work on frown

Everything is so old and brittle. I got the pass. side cover almost off, but the hose for the PCV won't come off. So, I'm gonna have to cut it and just buy some new hose later.

On the driver's side, I got the intake hose sorta off and that's about it.

More work will be done after I eat some food...

Yeah...didn't quite get done. Here's some pics...

I found this old jumpsuit in my dad's closet. I will be deleting this pic in about 5 min to prevent further humiliation... razz

That little piece of hose that comes off the PCV was really stiff, so i destroyed it.

I haven't quite figured out how to get the cover off now. It's STUCK. Block of wood and a BFH???

My bro got Ghost Recon, so I'm gonna go play it now...goodnight big grin

Yeah, it'll have to be tapped off with a rubber mallot. The gaskets tend to stick after years of being on there. I've had luck just tapping on the sides of them until they loosen up.

"tend to stick" hahhaha that's a big understatement bro! big grin

I was told by a "credible source" roll eyes that I could stick a flat head under it and attempt to pry it off but that metal doesn't look too strong.

More Junkyard Wars action from Will's driveway, coming up in about 7 hours! Goodnight!

OK...I got fed up after working on it for 2 hours this morning(it's aint even 10 yet) and so I put it back together.

Good News:

It runs! After all it's been through!

Bad News:

It's headed to the shop in a little while. I just can't deal with it anymore. I'm willing to bet he'll have it done by wednesday at the latest, unless he finds another problem while he's in there.

The task wasn't hard, but i just don't have the patience right now. All I want for Christmas is my truck to run... big grin

I'm goiug back to bed.
