Q1: Does anyone know first hand about where to locate the best bang-for-the-buck blower/turbocharger to fit a 99' Frontier 4x4? Or, any other after-market inexpensive and easy to install parts/kits/ways to increase HP?

Q2: Is there anything to the resistor timing kits being sold on eBay? Are these a scam or does it work? Supposedly, a resistor is connected to the ECU and for $10.00 you can boost your ponies by 20+. Here is a link to the item. I have no affiliation with this person and this should not be misconstrued as advertising for him/her.

Thanks & have a nice day,

I emailed them, and asked if they would let me test it or ride in their Frontier. I live in LA, and believe me, if it is trully good, it will sell like mad. I don't mind going to their place of business, it is close.

advancing the timing would just burn a whole lot of gas...maybe if they did some other kinda mod(turbo/super charger) then maybe...

AFAIK, there is no kit for a blower/turbo for Frontiers. If you wanna throw some major green out then it can be done big grin

Somebody used to have a electric blower on their HB but I don't think it was worth it at all...

TF&L,

Let me know if you check it out? For no more than it costs, I could just get it and try it.

Thanx for the reply,
Neil1 roll eyes

92PathSE,

Thanx for the followup. Do you have time to check out the site and give a more in-depth analysis? Or, have you heard of this potential scam before?

Appreciate the feedback.

Yeah theres no bolt on SC or turbo kit for the trucks, but for enough cash you can have it done.

Advance your timing to get 20+hp? Honestly I think thats BS. I mean yeah you can advance your timing to get more power, thats essentially what the Hypertech/Jet chips do. BUT you will use more fuel and your engine will be hotter, a lot hotter. Thats why Hypertech recommends the cooler thermostat with their system. Just think about long term damage.
Lataz...

Hahhahha.. a resistor?? Woudl be interesting to see where you are supposed to connect it.

Another way is to use the resistor inline with one of the temperature sensors. This just richens the mixture across the rpm range. Parts cost for that "mod" is about $0.05 at the most.

You can go one better.. and get a potentiometer from radioshack for $2. put it inline with the ecu engine temp sensor and you can modify the mixture. I did this with my old 280z. With a little tweaking on it I got a few extra hp, but it seriously hurts gas mileage. I would just turn it down driving around and bump it up a hair if I needed the extra fuel.

I'm not sure how well this would work in an oxygen sensor equipped vehicle.. (it would probably carbon up the sensor eventually, imo).

This worked for me ... easy 30 miles extra per tank and more kick in the butt.....

Get a Tornado Air MAnagement system--- at Napa, or some other auto parts stores( or on the WEB)... ive got a 98 frontier w/ no intake mods other than this.

You guys are GREAT!

I never expected this kind of response and ideas. Finally, someone knows about it! Although DATZ510's potentiometer is the real way to do this setup, I believe the kit on eBay is still worth the money simply because it includes the directions on where to attach the resistor(or for that matter-a pot). Instead of just locating the temperature sensor wiring under the hood and putting it in series with it. Maybe there is a simpler way to install it.

As far as the tornado kit, is this the same on at www.tornadofuelsaver.com for $60.00 + ship? billie you say it not only increased you horses, but it also decreased you fuel consumption. WOW, what an unexpected combination! Usually, you can only acquire hp at the expense of fuel mileage. I must try one of these.

At any rate, after listening and conversing with you guys if feel alot better about the outlook for improved Hp for my 3.3. There's still some aprehension I must admit and I hope Pecker and BlueFrontier98 are wrong about it being a scam & BS.

Oh yeah, TF&J sorry for calling you TF&L. It was pretty late while I was responding last night. I should have went on to bed like 92PathSE. It would still be interesting if you go to their place of business and check it out.

Thanx for all the imput. It's time for a cold beer! roll eyes

Have a good one,
Neil1

I'd take a cold beer too if i could legaly buy one...

I have a K&N box filter. $40 at Discount Auto. I got more hp and gas mileage. I don't know how much but I don't fill up as often. I do see a definate increase in low end. And you don't have to replace this thing nearly as much, and when you do you just wash it.

It also make the exhaust a little bit louder. When I get on the interstate, the tranny will drop from 3rd to 2nd(i have an auto) and it's got some grunt. 2nd gear is TALL too hehe

I don't have any exhaust mods yet and I know my cat is soooo clogged up. When i gut it eventually, we'll see how much power I get.

I'm looking for more power at about mid-rpms, without loosing what I have in the low-end. We'll see if this is possible...

......... I don't believe that to be a true statement, Neil1- I don't understand the quandry... K&N's advertise same ( more mileage, more HP)... why an unbeliever?

Just FYI, you can only get so much extra power by running slightly rich. more often than not it will only give you a couple more hp when tuned properly. It may affect cold idle and other factors of the engine too.. It could also cause the computer to start throwing codes among other things. Just be very careful if you do try any of this.

The setup I did was on an engine with no oxygen sensor with a L-Jetronic EFI system.. a far cry from todays complex EFI systems.

I'd be real leery about the guy selling a resistor to modify the timing advance. The computer controls the timing, so you risk damaging it if you have to open it up to modify it. Is it really worth an extra 2-3hp?

You could get much more hp than that by just going with a good intake and exhaust system to let the engine breathe a little better, changing to pure synthetic oil to cut down internal friction losses, and mabye install a good aftermarket ignition system for better combustion.

Just be careful modifying any electronic components on the truck.. they arent cheap to replace.
