I got a new to me 95 4x4 in December and changed the oil.

It was black and gross.

I put in Castrol GTX 5-30 with a Napa gold filter.

Yesterday after only 1200 km I changed the oil again and it was again black and ugly.

I now have 161,000 km on the truck.

Is my new oil cleaning the gunk out from the previous owner's infrequent oil changes?

Should I do this again in 2,000 km to realy clean it out?

Is Castrol GTX 5-30 too detergent?

I dunno -I use VAlvoline ( when I have used dino oil)..
Napa filter is good, tho.

Keep changing that oil AND filter until it cleans up.

My oil gets dirty pretty quick, after about 1500 miles (2413 km).

I change it every 2000-2500 miles. (4022 km) most people would say thats to early.

745 miles or 1200km would IMO be to soon. Let it go atleast 1000miles (1600km) then change it out again. Ive heard of people using this stuff called Seafoam. You put it in the oil for 500 miles or so to clean out the crap. Ive never used it so I dont know who well it works. ANYWAY...

The oil should get dirty, the new oil is cleaing out the old gunk as you stated. Change it every 4000km and you should be ok. If the engine is worn, other than rebuilding it, there isnt much you can do.

These are just my thoughts...

The 5-30 is a bit thin, but you're using the right oil and filter. Keep up the changes, it'll come clean eventually.

pretty sure that seafoam gets mixed into the air/fuel mix, not added to the oil.

It can be added to the oil. Next time I get some, I may try it that way.

you could mix in some transmission fluid for a gentle cleaning...most tranny fluid is a 5weight motor oil withe A Lot of detergent in it. Run it for 200-500 miles then change it.

Of course I had a relative who swore by pouring in a qt of kerosene and running it for 30 min at idle in the drive way. I wouldnt recommend that...
