Hi everybody Smile looking to tap your knowlege base if you don't mind. I'm trying to seperate a 1987 Pathfinder 5 spd. transmission from the transfercase there are 14 bolts I've removed I can seperate it a little bit but something is holding it up it's out of the vehicle so support isn't a issue are there any hidden bolts? Iv'e also removed the shifterplate any ideas /input would be greatly appreciated. Paul

This may sound stupid but I have to ask. Are you sure you are trying to separate it at the right place? Can you post a pic?

fair question, I'm trying to seperate it right behind the shifter 14 bolts coming from the rear and from the front. I've been on a couple web site consolidated transission and Phoenix and according to the picture of just the tranny I'm right were I should be. I don't want to mar the mating surfaces so I'm taking it slow. Thanks, Paul

No hidden bolts but if you removed all of them then it does take a litle pressure to separate the two. There are 2 alignment pins that don't like to let go. Yes make sure you removed all 14 bolts and the entire shifter assembly. Run you finger through all 14 bolt holes.

They can be a real booger. The dowels and sealant are all you are fighting once all the bolts are out and the t-case shifter is off.

There is nowhere to pry. You can beat it silly with a rubber mallet.
Once, out of desparation, I used a cut-off tool to MAKE a slot between the flanges where I could pry. I recall doing it near the outside of a bolt hole so it would not affect the sealing surface.

It's a fine line between clever and stupid.

I took a real small flat blade screwdriver a little bigger than the jeweler sized ones and tapped that into the seam to get an opening for a larger screwdriver to pry with. A little Power Blaster seemed to eat up the sealant some and helped loosen things up. Once it started to come apart it was easy breezy.

There are obvious pry points for the t-case seams, but not the t-case to tranny seam. At least not in MY experience. I had a tough time with the last one that I did.

strap + vehicle should take care of the problem

I seperated my t-case from the auto while removed from the vehicle and it was STILL a pain to get them apart. once you break that factory sealant 'bond' they make happy much easier.
