I have an obnoxious sound coming from the tranny... like a grinding, whirrring sound. There are no abnormal vibrations, just sound. Checked it at my dad's place, and there is tranny fluid leaking out the back... by the driveshaft input.

I have a friend selling a tranny/tcase for 400 bux. I was gonna buy it and swap it in.

I am curious to know what the 4wd tranny xmember looks like. I am wondering if my 2wd one would suffice.

I am also getting his driveshaft, so I can use the flanges to make a one piece shaft.

Anyway, if anyone has a pic or two of thier tranny xmembers for a 98-2000 4wd/manual tranny, that would be sweet.

Thanks Matt...

Yeah, I need a shot of a manual tranny x member.

I tried looking in my Haynes Manual (brought it to work today), and there is not one there. Frown

I am just wondering if I can get away with using my xmember now, or do I have to plan on doing a custom xmember. If I have to go that route, then I need to acquire help with this project... I really don't want to do that right now, well at least before the run anywayz.

It's possible that placement of the crossmember will vary from 2wd to 4wd , as well as between regular cab and extended cab.

Did you r trans ever get any lube changes?
HOw many miles on it?

Yeah, its had lube changes.

Approx 120k on it. Fluid is leaking out the back by the d-shaft, so I think I have a seal or bearings starting to bite it.

I thought about crossover placement, but I don't think it will vary too much. I think the only way you would be able to change the "placement" of the tranny crossmember is by placing the engine in a different location...

From a manufacturer standpoint, that seems like a PITA. I remember on Brian's pathy (granted its a different truck), the tcase was behind the tranny crossmember. The tranny was still bolted down, and the tcase "hung" behind it.

I dunno tho, I guess the only way to truley find out, is to drive up to Phx (again) and take a look at the tcase and tranny I want to get. I am still waiting on a call back from him.

They may be the same....Dig up the pics of my SAS...there's pics of my xmember installed...only difference is that U section, but otherwise it's the stock piece in the stock location.

Are you just low on fluid since you're leaking?

Something else...stock lo range with a 4 cylinder and 5 speed sucks...and Calmini gears are spendy. Could probably find another low mileage gearbox in a yard....Try Alma Imports....got my motor there for $650 with low miles...you'd probably be able to get a new used 2wd tranny and a yota case for what the other one will cost after you gear it down.

Give me a minute to find the pics. Not sure if the 4-banger is different than the V6, but the 4wd crossmember is very different from the 2wd on the V6 trucks. It uses two bolts instead of one per side and has an offset instead of being a straight shot between the frame rails. The crossmember also dips down to roll under the larger tailshaft housing.

2WD

4WD

That is something to consider. The nice thing about using the 4wd tranny/tcase is the fact that I will use it as a doubler going into the 4.7:1 yota case.

That will give me a kickass crawler ratio when I am done.

Where is this Alma Motorsports, and what is their phone number?

The sucky things are that you will have 2 t-case outputs hanging down and the total assembly will be much much longer, hurting your rear driveshaft angle and making the front excessively long.

There are several HBs and Fronties running dual cases from what I found, and it is commonplace for the yota guys to do it too...

I don't see the problem.

Alma imports is a yard on Alma School just north of Broadway. Look them up in the yellow pages on yahoo.

That 4x4 xmember above doesn't look like mine. Mine looks more like the other one.
