How much should there be? I've had it apart twice, the first time for a locker and the second time for a locker, both times done by 4WP. There is a lot of slop at the yoke. I can shake it back and forth but there are no leaks, the pinion nut is tight, and it doesn't get hot. I have had a noise at high speed under load but I believe it is the tranny or center bearing. I'm getting a one piece driveshaft to help get rid of the driveshaft vibrations I've had since lifting it. Should I be worried???

how much slop is there? Its probably just gear lash. There will be a very small amount of it..

The FSM states that the ring gear to pinion backlash should be 0.15-0.20 mm. Thats measured at the ring gear teeth.

The yoke will actually wiggle side to side. I should have the driveshaft off tomorrow and I'll try to take some measurements. I don't think it was like this when I first got the gears installed but I'm not sure. Over a year of driveline vibrations can't have been good for the bearings.

if it goes side to side, the pinion bearings are toast.

You will need to get new pinion bearings ASAP before it ruins your gears. Check with ABC Nissan.. should be around $100 for both bearings.

If the pinion flange nut were to come loose, could it be retightened? Does tightening the nut change the R&P setup?

I don't think mine is loose but I am more worried now than before about my third member. I finally got my one-piece driveshaft installed and the rattle when engaging the clutch at low rpm that I thought was the loose u-joint is still there. I don't think there is much I can do about it before the run.

Frown how much slop is there?

If the pinion is set up with a spacer, you could try hitting the nut with an impact wrench and see if that helps. It might at least prevent some gear damage in the long run. You will definitely need that thing set up again as soon as you get back from the run.

YOu can't pull it( rear pumpkin?) get it down to Pro Gear in Kearney Mesa and have it back by Saturday?

Their turnaround is pretty quick if you hand them over the chunk.

I'd say that beats having to drive back in front wheel drive, should the rear get too sloppy and start breaking teeth( i would assume that's a possible outcome).

PLease don't go to 4WP anymore for gear setup.

I have not tried to measure the amount of play in it. If I grab the lower end of the drive shaft and shake it back and forth (left to right of vehicle) it moves enough you can see it and hear it, maybe 1/16th of an inch. I can hit the nut with an impact wrench but I am worried about screwing up the gear mesh pattern.

Billie,
I'll give Pro-gear a call. Do you know if they have any experience with Nissan axles? One of the problems is with the new hours I'm working, the soonest I could get the third member to them is tomorrow afternoon. If they could get it done by Saturday afternoon that would be great. Gee this sounds familiar. It would be the third time the rear axle gets put together the night before the start of a run.

To make matters worse, I finished the SYE install last night and took it for a test drive around the neighborhood. The vibration on take off is gone. This morning on my way to work I found out that at any speed over 40mph I get vibrations and it gets much worse as the speed increases. smiley35 I'll have to pull the front of the driveshaft and get the SYE up to full speed by itself and watch it. The driveshaft is all new from High-angle, balanced and lubricated. Worst case will be I have to remove everything, repair my 2-piece driveshaft and reinstall it. Not that hard to do but I'm running out of time to get everything done.

Just checked Pro Gear's web site. If the site is correct, they don't work on Saturday and Mapquest does not recognize their address. Anyone know where they are? Web page says 7948 Ronson Rd. Kearny Mesa, CA.

Mapquest does know where it is... It's just east of the Nissan Dealer( on ROnson - East of cross street Convoy).

They know NIssans( according to Robin) They did my 9", too.

Maybe they'll take an "expedite fee" for working on Saturday.

lol The web site shows Kearny Mesa instead of San Diego. Even the Mapquest link on the site draws a blank.

Looks like you have to input the address manually. You would think that if they are going to go to the trouble of posting a link they could have their addy worked in to it.

Just look for the Nissan dealership on Ronson
( at Convoy) ... Go east- it's on the north side of the street.

Chuck, talk to Charles at Pro gear, real nice guy and he can probably get it back to you before the run, and he has done many nissans including Brians and my own.
