I'd keep what you have. The difference between 4.875 and 5.14 is minimal, and you have crawler gears for the trail.

Yeh, I like the gear/tire combination that I have and going lower would make highway driving very expensive and hard on the engine. Right now I run just above 3000rpm at 65mph. The only way I would go lower would be if I went with 35" tires. I was just pondering going to a D44 with the same gears I have now.

Thanks for all your input.

Chuck, I'll save you a trip to the shipper if you sell me the R&Ps, I need them for my H233B and the R180 (or the R200 if I get that from Robin). What front diff are you running?

Are you even selling the R&Ps separately?

Perfect if you ask me. Especially since you want your rig more capable off road.

Right now I've got 4.88s in my truck. The front will stay until I go SAS (already got an axle, just waiting for the Calmini setup) and the rear will stay until (if) I change out the rear axle. The stuff I've got laying around is a factory LSD with 4.3 and my old R200a with 4.3. The front has almost no 4wd miles on it but the outers are off of Kdawg's Fronty so they are six bolt style. When I get everything swapped out, there will be a R200a (5 bolt) with 4.88 and ARB as well as a H233 rear axle with 4.88 and ARB available. I don't expect any of this to happen any time soon.

Let's address your axle questions. What can be used beside the nissan axle...

On my fronty i use a rear Isuzu Dana 44, because it's about 58" wide and comes with factory disk brakes. The 44 was much cheaper to build the way i wanted it than the drum brake H233 that came in my fronty.
I do not run an emergency brake but it can be done easily. The axle is also 6 lug so no changes are needed there.

Another option for you might be a Ford 9", as suggested. On my Jeep Wrangler I run a Detroit Locker in a Ford Versailles 9", which comes with factory disk brakes. The axle isn't exactly plentiful but most people don't look at it because it came from a car. But it's perfect width; I use my jeep for rockcrawling and this axle has never given me a problem. Downside is it comes with 5x5 pattern and 28 spline shafts. The full width 9" version in trucks and broncos comes with 31 spline and is considered stronger. I am going to replace the Versailles with my custom Dana 60 so I can run 38s; which i haven't had time to swap due to my army deployment. My Ford 9" will be for sale. Or you can find one in a wrecking yard. A guy can always get custom axle shafts made for anything, with any lug pattern you want. There are plenty of companies out there doing this.

You have another option, i just mentioned my custom dana 60. You can go this route also. I bought the housing for 100$, thinking i could use it with the gears in it. But they were rusted solid. I took the axle to a friend who had a 4x4 shop in Salt Lake City. for $1800 he narrowed it, centered the pumpkin, had custom six lug 35 spline allow shafts made, put on disk brakes, with spool, and included a spare 35 spline shaft free. It's no longer full float, but let's be honest, who's going to break a 35 spline shaft on a light jeep, semi float or not?

So there you go, some things to chew on. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the Nissan axle...i'm sure the H233B with 33 spline shafts is bomb proof. But the cost of parts, adding disk brakes and the spendy ring/pinion means it may not be the best bet.

Hey Rondo, why don't you run the parking brake? I have that same axle and used the stock cable from the passenger side, and connected it to my fronty pull cable bracket on the frame. The drivers side drum is gutted, so only one set of shoes is holding the rig, and it works.

not a bad idea, it's just with the auto i never felt a need to hook it up, plus there's no safety inspection to worry about. also i've always hated the nissan pullout ebrake handle.

is your jeep trailered? if not how do you feel about the spool getting to and from trails?(street driving)

also are all 9" a bit offset in terms of differences in L/R axle shaft lengths?

Since I have a manual tranny, the parking brake is a must. I use mine regularly when offroad. I'm just not sure how it's going to work yet. I'm also considering going with drums in the rear. Except for extended offroad trips the bed is always empty. My factory shoes lasted almost 100,000 miles.

How did you guys connect the brakes to the stock system? Where did you get the fittings?
