As far as inspection....I haven't thought about that yet. Where I live in Colorado we don't have emissions anymore but rumor is they will bring them back soon. Chances are, if I MUST get it inspected via an OBDII port it probably won't be done legally. There's no way to hook up an OBDII to my pre-96 ECU.
The VH41 can be a very good choice depending on what it came from. I never really paid too much attention to them but they have some very strong advantages over the VH45. The alternator sits at the very top of the engine which not only frees up space but keeps the alternator out of the crap that fries them.
I will need to double check, but I think the USDM VH41s are supposed to be crap and the JDM VH41s are really what you want. There's another guy on a forum I visit who took a JDM VH41 block and put VH45 internals to keep the 4.5L displacement while having the tighter packing of the VH41.
None of the VG bellhousings will bolt up to the VH pattern. I had to get an adapter from Mazworx where you send in the bellhousing and they machine down 1/4"-3/8" off the surface where it meets the engine. Then once the adapter plate that is the same thickness is bolted onto the engine it doesn't add any length to the transmission overall. This way the flywheel doesn't need to be spaced like with many adapters.
The ECU is throwing a check engine light once it warms up (closed loop). It was randomly throwing an "injector leak" code after I replaced an O-ring but it has since gone away. If I check the codes through the consult plug and my laptop it does throw a code for EGR temp sensor (since I removed the whole EGR system) and the automatic transmission since it doesn't recognize one.
I did talk to some people who tune these ECUs and they thought they might be able to over ride these codes so it doesn't throw a light.
The ECU works great in a manual. The wiring was simplified a ton by not using an auto.
Forgot to mention, the VH41 and VH45 have different bellhousing patterns. There isn't an adapter commercially available for the VH41 right now which could limit some options.
The bad part is that this project turned out to be much larger than I expected. I didn't want to pay $1000 for a nice junkyard VG33. In the end the entire project (all the tools, parts, labor) have me at almost $13k.
I'll give you my phone number if you're going to try this. There's a lot of stuff I'd do differently.

Are you talking about the VH41 not having a way to attach a t-case? You do realize that I do have a t-case with my VH45...don't ya??? The VH45s can be had cheap enough, but all the little stuff definitely adds up.

I really should put some stock size tires back on and see what it will do. I've got a set of tires but I sold the wheels they go on.
