Ok the time has finally come to install the Lock-rite in the rear. Is there anything special I need to look for or is it straight forward. is there a gasket for the 3rd or just sealer? do I need to replace the axle seals? I'm guessing the diff takes about 2-3 qrts. I got 4 just in case. any thoughts?

Invest in the gasket for the 3rd, get yourself some high temp rtv also. Use the new gasket along with high temp rtv.
I've never dealt with the lock-right but I've heard the springs are the only tricky part. Basically you take the guts out of the carrier and replace them with parts from the lcok-right kit. My rear axle usually takes about 3 quts of oil. My axle seals were good so I left them alone. 1995 KC XE-V6 4x4. |

Don't you need to worry about the pinion depth?

I haven't read the destructions yet going to do that tonight or tomorrow night. as far as the pinion, I believe that it doesn't get touched just the innerds of the carrier(spiders).

I meant the relation between the ring and pinion. I now you need to have as certain depth for the gears to work. But if you don't change gears it might be OK.

no gear changes as of yet, just replacing the spiders with the Lock-Rite.

yes willie your right. When you pull the bearing caps you need to make sure you mark those prior to removal. When reinstalling the ring gear and carrier you need to re-set the back lash. It's imperative to mark everything the best you can. It will help you set everything back the way it was.
When I did my rear ring and pinion and Detroit locker install I wrote down all the measurements of everything prior to removal. During the installation I had a good reference of how everything should be. when your done with the lock right coat the ring gear with white grease. Spin the ring and pinion and check your ware pattern. Reefer your wear pattern to a chart showing your where it should be. Here's some links I found. There are better ones. Look through the how-to section. http://www.angelfire.com/extreme/hawaiianhardbody/locker.html 1995 KC XE-V6 4x4. |
